The very idea of Magic is to touch peoples imaginations, string them along through a portal that you create. A world where the curtain is pulled back and the land of imagination becomes reality.
That being said that is alot to live up to. It also means that you have to challenge yourself. I think most magicians could take a hint from acting. Including myself in this category, a magician needs to be far more than proficient with just sleights and misdirection. Magic stems deeper, we are creating imaginary miracles for people, but we have to convince them and ourselves that they are a part of our world sharing in the magic, and not just viewing it through a window. This is a very hard thing to do in a land where people think T.V. is reality.
Being a magician is about being an artist a craftsman a story teller, a poet, and finding a way to connect all your hard work and efforts into making dreams reality. Thats alot to put on the plate. If your up to the challenge and rise to occasion touching people's Pscyhe then you have done your job. Your not trying to fool an audience your trying to get them to believe what your doing is real and from all practical views if even you see it that way it is real. So stay true to yourself your practice and thinking with your creativity and you will move in the direction of creating real magic.
People want to believe why do you think so many people get disappointed by bad magic. Theres no substance, maybe your confidence is lacking my advice to anyone, especially those starting to travel the path of magic, is to work simple but effective tricks from the start. All things you can do with confidence this then gives you the opportunity to pursue being an entertainer. This means working on your scripts trying them out changing rearranging and outlining the basic ideas of your perfomance.
If you do street magic, not in hit and run style, but in true street busking fashion, you will gain a world of experience and knowledge each and everytime you work. Carry a notebook with you take notes after each show, understand the feelings of your audience did they laugh at the dumb joke, or did they laugh at some heccklers response. Its all handed to you for free you just have to be willing to accept it, and return from the situation with an even stronger understanding of your magic. Learning how to effectively handle and entertain people is a beautifull skill to aquire and it all can be done with practice and due dilligence in your work. No one ever said the road to anything worth doing would be easy, but if its atleast worth doing its also worth gaining all the experience and knowledge you will obtain during this growing process. So stay true to your roots, true to who your are and get out there and touch people's imagination. Best wishes and best of luck in all your magical pursuits.
