I'm off to see Derren's show tonight in Croydon. Very much looking forward to it, and I'm sure it will be superb. Will post a review at some point over the weekend. Anyone else going to any of his shows?

Would love to see your review.
Anyone else thinking of going to the Regent at Ipswich to see him?

OK, I said I'd put some kind of review together for Derrren's show so here goes....

Last friday I went to se Derren Brown who is a sort of magician and it was good.

That sort of sums it up really, and it is actually quite difficult to write something more substantive than my primary school effort above. However.....

As most of you will know Derren is currently starting out on a pretty comprehensive tout of the UK. Last friday i was lucky enough to catch him at the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon. Being relatively new to this game I had not seen a great deal of Derren before this. I have only seen the infamous Russian Roulette programme + the "Inside Yor Mind" DVD.

The "Inside your mind" programme gives you a pretty good idea of what to expcet from this show. Derren basically gives a fairly comprehensive performance of a variety of mentalism effects ranging from straight predictions, a little bit of hypnosis, psychological control techniques and "mind-reading" generally. All of this with the good-humoured wit that anyone who is at all familiar with Derren will recognise.

The audience participation (some of which is done en masse) at least appears to be genuinely random and Derren's interaction with his victims is a true delight and an example to all of us whether into the mentalism thing or not. Derren's performance is flawless and seamless and I would defy anyone on the basis of this performance not to like the man.

The first half of the show is quite light-hearted and goes through various effects that I have described earlier. The second half is much darker and more "serious". He specifically asked the audience not to talk about the specifics of this so as not to spoil things for future audiences. Obviously there are a number of you who are going to his later shows and so I will comply with those wishes. Suffice to say it's good.

After this Derrren obliges with an encore of a pretty impressive prediction routine and we all go home happy. Throughout all of this Derren makes quite clear that the techniques he uses are neither "magic" nor "spiritualistic" and without these assurances some of the audience would probably be left wondering.

Bottom line. Go. Whether you're into coins, cards, children's stuff, doing funny things with balloons or serious mentalism there will be something you can take from this performance. And even if you don't it's bloody entertaining stuff.

I have never done a funny thing with a balloon in my life!!!
We need to set up a National Society for the Protection of Balloons or something, if this is going on...

Cracking review there - the performance has already started with you telling us that you're not going to tell us about the second half. Already I am intrigued!!! Derren's a genius.

Thanks Fletch.

Obviously Derren has used NLP* on you to make sure you don't spill the beans. Thanks for the Review - only 39 days until I find out for myself!

*Nemo Linguistic Programming = 'bubble, bubble, bubble.....'.

I went last Thursday to the Croydon venue.
Fantastic evening! Thoroughly enjoyable!
Humorous and intriguing how he did what he did.

I wanna go again!

Very subtle it was too Mandrake. He said "Please don't tell anyone....."

AHA! Very good. Now all is as clear as my bowl. Talking of which, i better start swimming round frantically or on one side to get some attention; it's getting pretty groggy in here...

Great review. I'm serious.

If anyone reveals what Derren does, it will spoil the show and it's a fantastic one. That goes double for the second half.

I saw Derren last year and am going again this time round. It's the same show, but I'm still going! It's that good.
