Although I need to get a life, This is pretty cool!

Postby crozboz » Aug 5th, '07, 23:32

OK, I know many people will say that I reeally need to get a life, but i got my weekly deck of Bikes today, and loved the sight of cards in new deck order, but I shuffled them, as we all have to at some point - but i made a point of riffle shuffling them perfectly, as in splitting the deck in half, 26 on each side, and weaving the cards 1 by 1, as in one from each side, until it the order was black, red, black, red etc.

I then did it again. And again. Until after repeating the process 26 times, the cards were back in new deck order! I was amazed. I was also amazed that I had never tried it before.

Has anyone else found this?

All the best,
Croz

26 perfect Faros shuffles?

Next time you might want to check the order of the cards after just 8  :)

When you can do it at speed - and make it look like you are simply shuffling the cards together, you might like to check out John Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and Mike Power's "Power Plays" for some absolutely class effects utilising the principles of a perfect Faro or two...

doesn't this imply that 24 perfect shuffles would leave it back in new deck order and that 26 would not? hmm

good work though, doing 26 (or 24 perhaps  )

indeed 8 faros is all that's needed.

And Lawrence is, as usual, mathematically spot on... surely the deck will return to original order in cyclic multiples of 8?

8 out shuffles,

26 in shuffles

But only applies to a 52 card deck.

Cheers,
John

Maybe 26 is needed for an antifaro?

Edit: John beat me to it.

Are you talking about transposing the top & bottoms alternately?

If so, then it's correct that 26 shuffles will REVERSE the deck order, but it would then take 52 to put the deck back in the correct order.

Fine, as usual the rest of you are right, i was assuming it would have some correlation to the number of cards in a deck, ie. half.

I was also doing it wrong, i was keeping the back card the same every time, rather than the front. Im not sure whether it makes a different or not, but it seemed to.

Also, if you have the cards in A-K order, the 26th and 27th cards add up to make 14. Every time. Weird.

Anyone who can perform eight perfect Faro shuffles should start a religion because they deserved to be worshipped. I have come close to getting a perfect Faro on a number of occasions, but never quite managed it. I think I need to work on my technique....

Aye. That's weaving.

I think a lot of people assume a Faro should be done tabled or in the air... but, the method in that vid is pretty much acceptible :D

It's actually easy to do perfect Faro's that way with a new deck, but it does have to be said, credit where it's due, that vid is excellent, as doing 8 in a consistent fashion in a row is good going!

If you like table faros, have a look here :

(by the way, his new book is a very cute little one, it's worth reading it... ;))

How do you pronounce it? Pharoah? Far-o? Fairo? Faroh? Anybody?

The Faro shuffle calculator!
http://www.denisbehr.de/faro/

I have always pronounced it Faro, as in the place Faro (in Portugal).
