Fun Maths Puzzle

Postby Magical_Trevor » Aug 9th, '07, 10:55

Wasnt really sure if this would go down well on this forum, but I saqw the riddles and Paradox thread...and this is KINDA along the same lines...(ie it might stir up some fun antics and oppinions)

OK, The puzzle is as follows:

Using ONLY 3 2's and ANY mathematical technique, you have to make the numbers 1 - 12

Rules:
No decimals or rounding up
Thats about it...

I have managed 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9 and 11 (I'll start you guys off with an easy one...6)

6. 2 +2 + 2

Your turn... :P

er...
edit: well, i was wrong! oop
hm...
1= (2/2)^2
he he, i don't have a maths degree for nothing (i won't do them all though)

the better (read: possibly a little easier) one is using the number 1 to 5, using any of them, but once and only once for each number, make the number 1 to 30!

8 = (2 + 2) x 2
7 = 2! + 2 + 2
9 = 2! + 2! + 2!

Do you have to use all three 2s?

All the best,
Croz

I'm no mathematician, but factorial of 2 is 2 isn't it?

(2! = 1 x 2, = 2)

Any mathamatical functions? Including alternate numbering systems?

2x2x2 = 16

16 in hex is 10

Hex isn't a function ;)

dechex() is a PHP function in it's maths library =P So it is, a maths function *grasps at straws*

Is using a 2-based log (log-subscript 2) fair game?

It seems like fun at first but it gets pretty boring after some time.

Here, you can have this:

12 = ((2x2)!) / 2

I think 'tedious' is better than 'boring' as a description!

2/2=1
2=2
2+(2/2)=3
2+2=4

2+2+2=6

2(2^2)=8

((2+2)!)/2 = 12

My brane hurts...

22/2=11

you did not say if the twos were digits or integers :D

2 cubed-(2/2) gives 8-1 =7
2 sqared +(2/2) gives 4+1 =5

If a function is input-process-output then hex is a function
I know this is semantics but I could call a function the connor function which would add 3 to any number processed. As long as it did the same thing each time, ie it was constant in its output then as a function it would be valid.
so 2 connor would = 5
