Henrique Lecture, Bradford magic Circle

There was a turnout of about 30 members to watch Henriques lecture on children’s magic.

Henrique (Alan) started by using the phrase “ You are only as good as your last show” The lecture was based on this phrase as it is to be his last show. He then gave us a brief background of his magical experiences.

Alan then told us his personal techniques on how to make sure that kids are quiet for the magic. He does this by playing games which use lots of energy, so then kids aren’t jumping around during the magic. This takes up around 10 minutes of his hour long show!

He then showed us some attention-getters using balloons and a challenge to touch the roof- no magic yet, but plenty of audience participation!

Alan then showed us a routine using the diminishing gloves, which is normally an adult effect, but adapted to be a children’s routine.

Next up were some adaptations of sponge ball routines featuring the ladies favourite “Puff the magic Dragon”

Alan then showed us his linking ring routine, which I enjoyed as in the end the rings ended up linked through his jackets button holes, I like it!

He then explained more games, which focused on no one actually being out, this is because the children will get bored if they are sitting around waiting for the other children to finish the game.

After a short break we had the raffle – and somehow Ken didn’t win this time!

Alan then showed us a kids effect using multicoloured handkerchiefs and an attempt to count them.

He then showed us an old supreme effect about a girl who talked to strangers and he then moved onto a trick using a lit cigarette and a TT, to the story about how smoking is bad for you.

To finish he showed us a routine involving a puppet. First, its head fell off, but it carried on talking! Then its legs fell off to reveal a skeleton!
Brilliant.

Alan then received a tremendous round of applause for his last show.

Thanks for reading

Magic Mark

Nice one Mark. Thanks for reviewing that. It sounded like a great lecture and a big shame that he isn't still performing.
