What can I do with this book?

What can I do with this book? Anyone heard of it before?

Third Dimension by Roy Johnson.

I have had this book for about 24 years printed in 1977 by Good life publications.
It covers about 30 tricks most are self made. Things like ply wood and Formica are used.

Some of the tricks.
Matchick. =Matches to silk.

Close up Parade.
This is a range of cup and ball and die tricks. The item used is a camera lens case, well that’s how I made it a few years ago.

Flawless. Card and envelopes.

And some rope tricks Ring on a rope, Nut on a rope, (Nut as in Nut and bold not eating nuts) to name a few.

Any information appreciated about this guy or what I should do with an unwanted well loved (By Me) book

If you have access to Whaley's Whos Who in Magic you can find information on him. With the information you say is in that book I would love it somemore if I were you.

Hi Al
Unfortunately I do not have access to Whaley's Who’s Who in Magic and the internet fails to bring anything up about Roy Johnson, he is mentioned in a few reviews/profiles of other magicians as been an inspiration to them apart from that I can not find any other information on him or the book.

I have a good friend that has a copy of whaleys and he will be back this friday night from a cruise he is working. He sells a trick using Roy Johnsons SUM deck. I'll ask him what he knows and I'll have a look at Whaleys. I'll let you know what I find out. I do believe that your book is rare and you should hang onto it.

What Can I Do With This Book

:) I am amazed that none of you know Roy Johnson. he has been a friend for many year. President of Leicester Magic Circle several times; I think they eventually made him President Emeritus. He came out of semi retirement to lecture for me at Nottm Guild. And he was at all 5 lectures I've given to the L.M.C.
Roy was born in April 1932( 7 months before me). He learned magic, via tricks bought from Paul Clive's Magic Shop( there were 2 and a stand on Central Pier) Blackpool in 1947. Places I used to haunt on holiday.Never saw the beach! Was a pro close up, mental & cabaret magician from1953.
Did a great amount of work for ken Brooke. Indeed we owe the best handling for Nemo Rising cards from him. +
( via Bart Whaley)
He has lectured in UK, USA, Australia & Europe since the late 60's.
His books are amongst my prize possessions. I've never really taken to Close Up ( although I've performed it & written about it) BUT Roy's Close Up effects are, for me, superb. And I love his Stand up stuff. The beauty is ALL the moves & handling are so clean!
His Cash Card wherein a borrowed, signed( and NO switch) bill appears embedded inside a card) has been with me years and Geoff Durham always uses it.
The books are:
The RJ Experience.(1970)
Second Time Around,( 1971)
3rd. Dimension (1971 the only one still in print..Goddliffe Publications)
Final Call( 1979)
Silver Special (1989)
All published by Goodliffe.
Pure Gold ( 1988) Pub Martin Breese
The he himself published A World Of Clocks, Features 3 and a booklet on cards which I unfortunately gave away.
Tricks published in Pentagram, Abra series, Magic Wand, Genii, MUM, Epotica, Talisman, Magick, 3 audio tapes, 4 videos etyc. etc.
AND YOU have never heard of him????
Where have you all been.
You do not know what you have missed.
Allen Tipton
PS What to do with the book. Use its material, especially The Houdini Ring,
The Hades Book Test( Used by Paul D & Geoffrey D) The Flawless Envelope,The Card & Chewing Gum revisited& the Chop Cup ideas.
If you are not performing then only pass it on to a good , experienced, young magician.

Began magic at 9 in 1942. Joined Staffs M.S at 13. Nottm.Guild of M. (8 times President. Prog Director 20years)IBM. Awarded Magician of Month 1980 By Intern. Pres. IBM for reproducing Dante's Sim Sala Bim. Writes Dear Magician column for Abra. Mag.

Hi Allen
I remember the guys in Sheffield talking about Roy when I was first getting into Magic, he did visit Sheffield a few time as I recall but never got chance to meet him due to work ( I was in the Army)

His name is mentioned on the internet by a few well known Magicians but nothing about Roy himself Unfortunately.

I agree the book needs to be passed on to someone who will appreciate the work and has time to make all the props also has experience.

Thank you Allen for taking to time to give a small review on Roy very much appreciated.

What Shall I Do With This Book

Postby Allen Tipton » Sep 4th, '07, 09:59

:) Well King Jeux unless you can get Mr. Deck to pass his on to you, you'd better write to Goodliffe Publications Ltd., Unit 3, Guild Rd., Bromsgrove, Worcestershire B60 2BY and get a copy at £8 post paid before they all go.
I'm am sure, if you like good clean handling magic which is accessible to all and has great 'plots' you'll enjoy RJ's work. Remember all the material has been thoroughly tested in performance by Roy, before being written up in book form. Some of his items were marketed by Ken Brooke.
Later try Magick Enterprisies, Broad St., Sheffield ( Russell Hall) for second hand copies of the others. Derek Lever ( Taurus Magic) has book 12 & Final Gold in his used magic list.If you decide, eventually to have the RJ books in your library,go for Second Time Around, Third Dimension & Final Call long before you look at the final two books. These were the four I used most material from.
Hope you have as much fun & joy as I've had learning the routines and more important, using them in performance.
