I have a tonne of old magic tapes from when my dad started up. Most are slightly old hat but still have some good stuff on.

I wondered, how would I go about putting them onto dvd as they are starting to become very old and are already playing badly as it is.

I don't know if you can record from vhs to dvd on a combi dvd vhs player? sounds a lot cheaper

there are companies that will do it for you, but it seems to be about £10.00 per hour of film transferred, i.e. pricey as hell

I used a DVD/VHS player for transferring my old VHS tapes to DVD (which is made for this express purpose). Works a treat.

It will not, however, transfer any VHS tape that has the security code embedded. Of my magic collection on VHS, there were only a scant few that had the embedded code (for example, Daryl's VHS encyclopedia of card sleights has the security code, so I wasn't able to transfer those).

I think that you can be fairly certain that the older VHS tapes of your father's will not have that code, though. In fact, I had no problem transferring Ammar's Cup and Ball VHS set onto DVD.

I got a DVD recorder with a hard drive built in £179 and moved all my tapes to the hard drive via scart from the video player. Then from the hard drive to DVD.

If you have not played a video tape for a while a good tip is to fast forward the whole way and then rewind. This will loosen any tapes. Tapes swell when they have not been used for a long time due to changes in the ambient temperature hence the FF and RW.

Once on a DVD you can get them on your PC and change the file format to what you want or even have clips you like converted to Flash for a banner or ad for your website. If you want that I know a man that can do it free for friends
