what pices of music do you think would go well witha particular trick.

eg. run rabbit run run run here comes the farmer with his gun gun gun, ideal for a runn rabbit run trick.

any ideas funny or serious i'd like to know.

I'd say you have to be careful using music as it could get in the way of any patter, however some routines of course can be done silently.

An exellent example of music with magic can be seen on the Andy Nyman performance DVD, I can't remember the name of the trick right now (or the music), but its a real upbeat peiece that Mr N. uses to deal the cards out too. Very amusing. It works very well.

The Andy Nyman effect mentioned was called Charade, and absolutely hilarious it is too - it uses Kylie Minougue's Can't Get You Out of My Head, and he deals the cards in tune to the LaLaLa bit...

Boris Wild's Kiss act uses music effectively and cleverly too. He doesn't speak over the top of the music but he doesn't need to.

I would think that if you want to use music in your magic, you should think about the effect you want to create, what you want your audience to feel and then choose suitable music. It would be wrong to find a piece of music you like then try to fit magic around it. Magic and Effect comes first - then the music offers a helping hand in creating the magic and effect.

Cabaret magicians I know from the holiday parks nearly always had a couple of effects performed to music.

One guy would float a flash paper rose that he folded neatly, then plucked it from the air, set light to it and it would change to a 'real' rose. The whole effect would be done with soft red lighting to the song Kiss from a Rose by Seal. It was absolutley brilliant.

He would also perform with a floating cane (with flame on top) to the theme from Mission Impossible.

Classical music was very common - no words to distract the audience, but big changes in tempo and crescendos to fit with the effects portrayed worked very very well.

Head twister (is that what it's called) performed to 'Let's twist again'

If I remember anymore I'll let you know.

How about an upbeat track for a series of silk vanishes/appearance tricks? I've just bought Special D - Come With Me on single. It's a real clap-along song that your specs could clap along to while they watch. It's an energetic song to listen to, and uplifting too.

Would probably work with any dance track with a definite beat to it for the kids to clap to.

If anyone remembers the old TV show The Interceptor (helicopters, laser guns, long black leather coat etc) then the theme for that would be great for an upbeat stage Magic session - possibly Metamorphosis type of thing or anything where there's action and no patter - David Copperfield style presentations and so on. (And I have it on MP3 file if anyone's interested!)

It's a great piece of music (nicked from one of the classics, of course) and was the best part of the programme!

I've just remembered another!

The Beetlejuice theme music!!!!

Trust me. It's superb. It's instrumental and sounds Harry Potter-y... I think it might be called Anikos. Not sure though.

Edited: It's not called Anikos, but a Google search on Beetlejuice is quite fruitful.

Best go. My boss (or is it my conscience?) is telling me to get off the internet and do some work.
