Fortune Telling Tea Cup

Postby themagicwand » Sep 9th, '07, 12:17

I appear to have bought a tea cup for fortune telling on eBay. It looks rather nice with all sorts of zodiac style images inside it, but I've no idea what kind of routine it will fit in with. I'm sure an idea will come along eventually!

Perhaps I could use it at psychic fairs rather than the more traditional tarot cards? Have a pot of tea "on the brew", get the punters to sit down & make themselves comfortable, sell them a cream bun or two while they wait, and then do the tea leaf thing. Sounds rather civilised actually!

I knew a lady who did tea leaf readings at psychic fairs. She seemed to do reasonably well. She had disposable cups I remember. No cream buns though.
I remember at the time thinking it was a lot of hassle.

Is this 'The Cup of Destiny'? Large white cup and saucer, red markings? I bought one a few years ago, merely from curiosity.

I think it's more suited to a private reading, than a psychic fair. Washing up is likely to be even more of a hassle than providing the tea. I don't think people will want to have the same cup someone else has just used. :)

hmmm...i wonder if you can gimmick a small china cup with some glue and some tea leaves into shapes and symbols? and maybe varnished?

pour in some tea, pour it back out...shape is seen?

You probably could, but people might notice the rather firm nature of the shape (or they might not). It's certainly worth a think.

Going in an entirely different direction, I think that could be a nice comedy revelation in a 'gypsy' card trick.

Yes, I think it is. It looks like quite a nice piece of kit, and will look nice amongst my other paraphernalia. Can't wait to see the wife's face when it rolls up on the doorstep. Hopefully she'll be at the shops...

I've seen those cups, with accompanying books, on sale in Waterstones and similar places. It was interesting to note on my last visit to Waterstones a week or two back, they had a rack of Tarot card sets and books but all the cardboxes were empty. A notice said the cards had been removed but were obtainable at the checkout. Presumably too many thieving fingers helping themselves!

You'd have thought they'd have seen that coming.
