I learn best from a mixture of both books and DVDs. I find the visual element of DVDs to be very helpful when learning, say, a new sleight because books can sometimes be a bit confusing and hard to follow because I am left-handed and have to reverse the instructions. Harder than it sounds when you're concentrating on following a series of instructions.

I suppose it depends what type of person you are and how you best absorb information.

I'm a very visual person, and so benefit more from actually seeing the move etc being done, such as on a DVD, rather than trying to fathom out the nuances from a book.

That said, I've got a mountain of books that are invaluable to me, once I've got a basic grasp of what I'm learning.

i would have to say that books are the way to go.
this way you have a written account of what is supposed to be happening, and you will be able to work it out easily by watching the move performed say, in the midst of a card routine.
