You may have seen Copperfield perform John Cornelieus' Vanishing Nickle, and effect which is still available in a few places. You should check that otu. I would bet on your local magic dealer.

...which is called 'Fickle Nickle' and can be found in his book "The Award-Winning Magic of John Cornelius" - a book which I highly recommend anyway.

I am hesitant to post this, but what the heck. Melisa I think you may be a little disapointed in achieving the effect you are looking for. Copperfield did perform Fickle Nickle. However, there are a lot of great vanishes using slight of hand just remember there is always more to it then just waving your hand over an object or giving your hand a twist. I don't mean to sound like I am stating the obvious but it has been my experience that many beginners tend to look for 'real magic' and walk away disapointed.

I too recomend Bobo's book. I also think that 'Mark Wilson's course in magic' is the best for a beginner and the Introduction in the first book of 'Tarbell Course In Magic' And as I'm sure I have stated before I like books over dvd's because that way at some point you have to put yourself into the effect, not just copy somebody else. Michael Ammar's tapes are a perfect example. They are wonderful and he teaches very well the problem is most folks end up performing just like Mr. Ammar down to his laugh. That is not to say that DVD's don't have their place they are great for learning technique unfortunatly sometimes it is hard to seperate technique from effect.

As far as sleight versus gimmick? I strongly believe the best method, (usually the simplest) for the greatest amount of effect/affect is always the way to go, regardless of necessity for gimmick. And then to be completely contradictory to my own words, I tend to stay away from gimmicks as I'm too lazy to carry them.

Some excellent advice here.
I'd just like to add something though.
You don't get many instant results with coin magic. I think this is what puts a lot of people off.
You can pick up a pack of cards and perform something almost straight away, but with coins it's not as instant.
Don't let this put you off as the rewards can be truly magical, and there's not enough coin workers around it seems.
Have fun. :)
