I was looking for a flat screen telly yesterday and found this little beauty
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... ctID=16413

It arrived this morning. It's a refurb, but quite frankly it looks absolutely brand new. It's not massive at 17", but it's perfect for my purposes and for the price it's an absolute steal. Just over 100 quid delivered! Widescreen, Nicam, text, lots of inputs including PC. Job's a good 'un.

looks like you picked yourself up a bargin there Tomo. I've been looking around for a new TV myself, seems to be some very good prices on that site, I'll have to have a look.

A lot of companies are flogging off old LCD and CRT tellies at the mo, because of the impending Digital switch. Therefore, LOADS of bargains are out there.

Mrs Seige got one for her birthday off me for her study, a nice Daewoo LCD... wallmounted, it looks just like a photoframe, and under £100 delivered for a 17"

So, as Tomo says, if you're not bothered about a Digital TV tuner—i.e. you've got Sky or a Freeview box—then take a look around the 'net.

Personal fave sites are Novatech, Aria, Microdirect and Scan. There's some real bargains out there...

I found my telly via the pricegrabber.co.uk site. I've always been a bit dubious of these price comparison sites, but this one did the business and sent me to Micro Direct.

i got a 15" (its what you do with it that counts) lcd from sainsburys two years ago for £150..never had any problems with it, great picture, ports for p.c. and with the right cable, xbox 360 at 60hz, great viewing angles and all that jazz...

cheap n cheerful is sometimes the way to go...i had a zen micro player, broke within 3 months...sent it back, bought a cheapo player from maplins, had it for over a year, not one problem with it and cost half as much...

i realise i might of jinxed them both now...

I'm not a TV wizz here, so correct me if I'm wrong. But it appears that the bigger TV sceens get, the worse the quality is, often sh!t. It gets very pixelated and often freezes a lot, I don't think this is the case with regular big TV's but I think it is with plasma or flat screen, or HD, actually, I'm not entirely sure what HD is...

A friend of mine has got a HUGE flat screen telly and the picture quality is awful. You can see the pixels. I think it's because there's only so much information in a TV picture but it''s being spread over a larger area than it's designed for.

I got a 42" rear projection and I am well happy with that, good viewing agles no issues watching in daylight (like the old ones) and its a lovely picture, my sister said its a better picture that her plasma of similar size.

T'is nowt to do with size. It's quality. Upscaling and freezing are inherent features of low-end stuff.

Digital TV upscaling can cause pixellation, which wasn't apparent so much on old CRT screens, which had a much more gentle and soft natural scaling. Even rear projection screens or LCD projectors look better than modern expensive LCD or plasma.

HD eliminates this to some extent, but is so poorly supported.

If going for a plasma or large (32" or bigger) LCD, look out for the '1080' resolution, and the 'upscaling'. Some have filters which help, but it's never going to be perfect.

In the future, this may change... but bear in mind that most TV broadcasts, movies, DVDs etc. are designed for 625 vertical scanlines of info... on much higher resolution plasma and LCD, these scanlines look lego-bricked. Only when true HD broadcasting comes of age will you take advantage of the huge resolutions the modern TVs have to offer.

Here's a fact: We bought a 42" plasma TV for our living room. Aside from the fact it was over-huge, we returned it because the actual quality of standard broadcasts was dire. What miffed me most is that the set was mis-sold in store—it had obviously been hooked up to a HD DVD player on a 'showreel' loop. The actual quality when we got home made me question my eyesight.

My advice is to wait. Personally, I'd rather have the TV small and crisp.

Quite the opposite. She tells me 'Eating small portions but plenty of them is far better than a large meal and feeling well and truly stuffed."

This damned telly can be told to turn itself off and on!!!

The potential for freaking people out... interesting to say the least.
