... 'tis true, but you get FREE UK SHIPPING.

That's the claim. The currency conversion is not such a problem, as most people are appreciative of the lower costs anyway.

It does say
The Penguin has landed.
Announcing PenguinMagic.co.uk with FREE SHIPPING to Europe!
so, as long as the exchange rate stays as good as it is currently then Penguin will certainly be even more of a bargain source.

Cliff, it really IS good news - esp. since the .UK site covers EUROPE and not just the UK.

Probably part of the reason they stuck to USD as the curency. Most previous PM customers are used to dealing with the USD anyway, so there's no difference there. Just, theoretically, lower shipping.

I wonder if they ship FROM Europe? A dabble is required...

If they DO, then shipping will theoretically be faster, too.

HOOORAY FOR PENGUIN!!!

My thoughts exactly. Mind you, with the International carriers, post and freight companies all knifing each other for business, it might be that Penguin have cut a very low cost deal with one of them using existing transport and merging with other traffic so they can afford to offer shipping at no charge.

Based on other threads re imports from the US , if they declare them as 'Gifts' they should be VAT zero. But it's a fine point of law and I'm sure HM Customs & Excise, or equivalents, will disagree!

By the way, as of March 1st this year, 5% additional taxation on certain US items was applied and it increases by 1% every month until it reaches 16%. This is in retaliation for Uncle Sam granting tax haven status to Microsoft and similar companies and was deemed to be unfair by the World Trade Organisation in 1997! Some items of clothing are affected so beware in case some magical items fall under the 'wrong' tariff headings - it could add 7% and rising.

Just had an e-mail which reads thusly:

Hi Paul,

The Penguin has landed in Europe! That means fast delivery and FREE SHIPPING for our customers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Spain, France, and throughout the entire European Union.

And for all of our customers it means an even wider selection of magic from inventors around the world.

To order from Penguin Europe visit our new European site at http://www.penguinmagic.co.uk. For the first week of operation we've limited the European line to only our most popular items. That will allow us to get everybody at the new facility trained and ready to rock... Penguin style.

All orders placed through the http://www.penguinmagic.co.uk site will ship from Europe. All orders placed from http://www.penguinmagic.com will ship from the US. European Customers are welcome to order through http://www.penguinmagic.com, but our regular International shipping rates and delivery times will apply.

We are working to create the best possible magic shopping experience with the lowest possible prices, and we hope you enjoy the new site and the added level of service it enables us to provide. Thanks for choosing Penguin Magic.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Evans

I e-mailed back to ask about that but I'd guess they could eventually show prices in Euros. Which doesn't fill my Colonel Blimp heart with joy but I suppose it would be nice for others as there are a further 10 countries joining the Euro club on Saturday - and I'm sure the timing of this new arrangement isn't a co-incidence!

At the moment it's better to buy in US$ than € so get in and fill yer boots, folks!
