Hello from Dr Spirit

Postby Dr.Spirit » Sep 18th, '07, 22:47

Hi
My name is - well, never mind!
I post here under the name Dr.Spirit. Way back in the early 80's when magic was definitely 'uncool' , I worked on various arts projects, theatre and eventually alternative cabaret.
My growing interest in magic led me to organise weird nights out - as an alternative to alternative cabaret!
So I started off performing a sort of dark comedy mentalism routine as Dr.Spirit 'Metaphysical Detective.' the last show I organised was the wonderfully titled 'Dr.Strange's big night out'. This show was closed down by the local council, and I hung up my fedora.
At this point my wife said that she would leave me if I did not get a proper job. Facing such an emotional chasm, I decided to become an art teacher. I am now head of art at Kenilworth School (for anyone who lives in the area!).
I do not think that I have ever been interested in performing - as I get a far bigger kick out of creating and thinking. Being a teacher in a large Sixth Form centre gives me a ready supply of intelligent, critical subjects on which to try my ideas. So, although being a teacher is not a job I would recommend in the current 'target setting' culture - it all kinda works out for me.
My latest 'thing' is Sanctum2, developed with Rick from outlaw effects. It is selling real well in the US and getting nice reviews on the Cafe.......
And, it is just starting to break here in the UK, with a thread starting on this very forum.
Sanctum2, is a precious child. I am watching it start to walk, and smiling like a doting father as it's first words are being understood. So I am more than happy to devote some of my time to answer questions or enter general discussions.
I guess, my aim here, is to enter the mentalist forum and contribute on a deeper level.
What else? Well, I am a painter too. Favourite artists - Francis Bacon and Steve Ditko. My musical tases range from Purcell, throught to Dead Can Dance (Slapp Happy anyone?). Robert Anton Wilson and Carl Jung are my heroes. Favourite Performer? I am not going to try to be clever here - Max Maven and Derren Brown (both of whom we owe a great debt to in the development of mentalism).
Tastes in magic - towards mentalism, away from baloon animals.
Relegious beliefs? Total distaste for any.
Politics? Anarchist/Libertine (no, really!)

Age?.......... very, very old.........

As soon as I saw you were keen on Art and Dead Can Dance, a sudden surge of nostalgia whipped through me as I recal sitting doing art history homework in a heady 'atmospheric Derek' of a study, with DCD oozing out of the Denon tapedeck.

Those were the days!

Thanks for that... welcome to TM

Di Doc

I know Kenilworth and will be moving to Leamington this coming Friday. I work on the outskirts of Coventry (Binley) from last week. Our paths may cross
