Hello everyone,
I've sent off my registration for the Blackpool Magic bonanza in Feb. I have no idea what to expect as I have never been to anything like it before. Can anyone give me good advice?-apologies if this topic has been raised already, I'm new to this site and magic in general :)
I was also wondering,(I am still very much wearing magic L plates, so please excuse my ignorance) I have two things I'd really welcome your wise advcie on, can anyone help?- 1) :?: I just bought a Boston coin box and it seems obvious to me that there is plenty of space to secretly stow coins; I know that the box wouldn't be so popular if it weren't effective but does anyone have tips or reassurance for me so that I can convince myself my audience isn't just humouring me!
2) :?: Somebody(not me, honest!) badly performed an overhand sort of shuffle on my mental photography deck, when I wasn't looking. Now it is all confused and inconsistent even though I tried to restore its order. How can I make it work again?-surely I don't have to purchase a new deck?
:D Thanks to you all and apologies for my lack of knowledge-its hard learning, there just isn't enough regular live magic to be observed. It is definitely something that needs to be observed too. The Royal Road to CArd MAgic, for example, is an excellent book but I have lots of questions and remain unsure that I'm getting it all right. Some of the basics are escaping me and I feel too daft to walk into my friendly local magic shop, where an amazing feat is performed ever four minutes, and meekly enquiring whether I'm executing a hindu shuffle correctly!
Anyway, thanks for reading!

Hi! I found it pretty nerve racking when I was around magicians when I first started. I think this gets better with time. I'm now alot more confident going in to magic shops etc.

Talking about the Blackpool Magic Convention, don't worry you'l love it! When I went last February I was very nervous about how over people would accpet me seeing as I wasn't that advanced and I had only been doing magic for about a year. I found everyone to be realy nice and friendly, because ultimatley everyone there is there for the same reason as you - to have fun and learn. Just a note, if you want to write abit more on the Blackpool Magic Convention then there is already a post running on it here http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic19838.php. To find if there is a topic on what you're looking for there is a Search Bar at the top ^, and then it keeps the forum neat and tidy. Anyway, I've written way to much, basically I'm saying Hi! and welcome.

Oh and with you talking about Royal Road to Card Magic, pretty much everyone on here classes that as a bible so I'm sure anyone will be willing to help you! It's pretty daunting starting magic, atleast everyone here is here to help!

The reassurance I needed!

Thanks for your long, full and useful reply. It is worthwhile for me to hear that others have felt bewildered and inferior in the presence of more experienced magicians!- My local magic shop(and its colourful array of customers who happily loiter there) really couldn't be friendlier but, whenever they give advice they do tend to be conjuring and causing objects to unexpectedly assimilate(if that be the right word...hmmm...) before my very eyes, which means that their words of encouragement get lost somehow! The joy of the internet is that nobody is absent mindedly doing card flourishes whilst recalling what it is like to be a beginner
It doesn't help that I'm not the most confident card in the pack, magic is working wonders with that though, like I never would have expected!
I will follow up the Blackpool discussion links so thanks for that too.
Bring on February, I can't wait :D

Hi LyndseyMagic.

As TheLondonI says, a lot of the people on here know the Royal Road back to front (me included :) ) and will be more than happy to help. In fact cardies enjoy helping :D .

When I first started, I knew no magicians (I still don't!) and I wished I'd discovered TM earlier. It would have saved a lot of time floundering and practicing badly. If you're stuck, just ask!

On the topic of your Mind Power deck, it may be seen as exposure to explain how a gaffed deck is set up here on TM and we may not be able to do it. Since your magic shop lot seem to be a friendly bunch, I think the best bet is probably to take the deck there, in its mixed up form, and ask for advice. 8)

Regards,

Mark

Wise words

Hi there,
Finding magicians to talk to is hard and I think TM is fantastic, I really do. I'm pleased I've found it. Saying that a magician appeared as if from nowhere whilst I was out buying milk(not in a puff of smoke or with any impressive effect; disappointingly), he noticed my plastic bag from the magic shop and ran across to say hello(my local magic shop doesn't sell milk as any sort of sideline-I was re-using!) Are magicians reallly so rare that they sprint across shopping centres? This man seemed to think so.
Anyway, he showed me some stunning coin work, it truly glittered. I'll be optimistically re-using that carrier bag more often!
I appreciate the offer of help with The Royal Road. I'm taking a light break from it and have started with Tarbell(book2, book one was out of stock) who has given me fresh enthusiasm. But when I decide to pick up with the cards again it is nice to know I can seek help here :)
I understand that the deck can't be explained here, I'll take it down to the friendly chaps who sold it to me to beg advice...maybe pick up some carrier bags while I'm there
Linds'
