Gregory Wilson In Action

Postby donkeylord » Aug 28th, '07, 00:46

I checked under reviews request and reviews and I can't find anything on it. Its a 3 DVD set of tricks by Gregory Wilson. Just wondering if anyone has it because although I'm not the biggest fan of his style I enjoy his tricks.

Here are my thoughts on the In Action DVD set.
I think my favorite thing is watching Greg perform outside for live people. My least favorite thing is all the same routines on this set that was on his earlier dvds. If you have his earlier dvds, then you already know most of these routines. Seeing the tricks done 'in action' helps give you a good feel for the routine, how it plays, finding offbeats, etc.
I'll give my brief impression of the routines but remember they are my opinions and will differ for other people and performers.

Volume 1:
Backstage Pass - Greg's method of doing the pass. Nice looking though I've never tried it. I believe he said he put this on Pyrotechnic Pasteboards dvd.

Body Piercing- This trick is kind of different. Different kind of effect and so it has a uniqueness to it that is pretty cool. Will require good presentation skill but has good misdirection built in.

The Tell- This is a card peek. What makes this is Grag's presentation of it. Very entertaining.

Pitch & Ditch - Coin changes when thrown in the air. Not really for me. Just not my body language style. This can also be found on Off the Cuff and On the Spot.

Coin in Watch - From Off the Cuff. It is nothing major.

Band thru Wrist - From Off the Cuff - It is a broken and restored rubber band effect. Good impromptu effect if you don't know a broken & restored rubberband.

Fistful of Dollars - I like this one. Greg produces three coins one at a time, then vanishes them one by one. Need a gimmick.

Card to Pocket - Great routine and lots of room for entertainment.

Vol. 2

Kissing Up: Is nothing that will impress magicians, but great for layman. Produce a chocolate in a flash of fire.

Vanish 5000 - From Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment. Vanish sugar from a sugar packet. Easy to do. No gimmicks.

Off Base - Broken and restored wineglass. This could play well, didn't look so great to me. I didn't care for it. The best part was Greg's subtlety at the very end.

Flat-Out Monte - I think I've seen too many montes to give a fair opinion on this. It is good.

Head trip - From On the Spot. Great utility move.

Coin/Card thru Table - Blah, I'll pass.

Multi Color Pen & Blind Date - Out to Lunch, he uses his Stockholder wallet. Nothing major.

Learner's Permit to Thrill - Not as good as License to thrill from Art of Astonishment. Borrowed License to pocket.

Recap - From Off the Cuff and On the Spot

Vol. 3

Time Card - Telling time with a deck of cards. Not my style.

Slot Machine Scam - I actually really liked this one. Its different and has a nice method and potential to it.

Chip on Shoulder - Nice surprise for the spectator. Good, not great, but could be fun.

Cut Throat - Impressive routine. Well done. Will play well with audiences.

Foreign Affair - Maybe good for layman, but just seemed so obvious to me. The ending will avoid any layman from thinking they know how its done though. So even if they think they know the first few stages, the end will get them. This is also a marketed trick you can buy if you don't want to make the gimmick.

Garret Thomas' Ring Thing - Great effect by Garret Thomas! However I did not like Greg's additions. It is not something I think magicians should chance with someone's borrow ring. Better get insurance if you do.

Bounce No Bounce Balls - What?!?! I failed to see how this made it in the dvd.

Bonus Footage of Greg performing a show. - Great to see, however I think he is better as a close-up magician. It suits him better I think.

I am happy I bought these dvds. I cannot say I took much from them material-wise however. Maybe that is because I have his earlier dvds and learned a lot of the routines from those. I can say, I do recommend these dvds.
