you hand someone a business card.. they write a word on the back.. you take it back.. face down.. without looking.. you put it in your wallet.. close the wallet, put it away, and already you know what word they are thinking of.. and you divine it in anyway you like..

a basic effect.. but it plays strong.. and of course.. there are many other effects you can use the wallet for

Alternatively, rather than putting the wallet straight away (which can be done), I find it to be a rather nice subtlety to actually place the closed wallet in the specs palm-up hand, and have them cover the top with their other hand.

That way, the card is not only concealed within the recesses of a closed wallet, but the wallet itself is held/covered by the spec themselves, whilst you 'read their vibes'.

Bear in mind that, with this kind of presentation, you can actually string the final reveal out over several (very startling/eerie) minutes, and can also incorporate cold reading aspects into the reveal.

Whilst this type of effect can play incredibly strongly, it's good to keep in mind that presentation is - quite literally - everything.

Once the final reveal's been made, and the spectator is reeling, you take the wallet back from them, remove the card, and flip it over, revealing the word/symbol/whatever.

If there's more than one observer, it's a good idea to have the actual spec write their word etc, so that only THEY know what it is - this then gives an extra impact when you finally flip the card and reveal their word to everyone watching

Could you use a small pad of flash paper instead of a card?

What? A full pad, or a single piece?

In fairness, you could probably use both - though I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to :?

If the thinking is along the lines of, spec writes on fp, you get a glimpse and then burn the evidence...well, I'm not entirely sure this could be played without suspicion.

From the spec's point-of-view, they would see themselves writing something, you putting it away, you then taking it back out, and then an incineration before the reveal; there's no logical reason for you to have put it away in the first place, if this is what you have in mind - in fairness, to their mind, doing things in this way would actually give you ample time to glimpse what they'd written WITHOUT the wallet being involved at all!

Believe me, it plays strongly-enough with the minimal moves, described above, without the need to over-complicate

Okay, don't laugh at me here but I have a serious question. I'm vegetarian and don't like buying animal products such as leather. Do any of you know of any peek wallets made from canvas or something similar?

Fortunately magic doesn't have much to conflict with vegetarian principles but thanks for highlighting this aspect anyway.

Scott Creasey, he of B.I.P. book fame, sells, or used to sell, his 'Swiss Army Wallet' which is canvas with velcro fastening. It was made that way to fit with the younger styles of 'wallet in jeans pocket' rather than the more traditional 'wallet in smart suit jacket pocket' idea. Scott's contcat details are on his website at http://www.scottcreasey.co.uk/

Thanks, I'll look into the Swiss Army Wallet, it sounds like it suits my style as well as my ethics :)

Just a quickie! It is almost a misnomer to call the Outlaw-Wallet a wallet. It is in fact a business card holder. That should clarify a few things and give all of you that are interested something different to think about. It is a beautiful product as is the Panther wallet from Outlaw. It is excellent for peeks and PW.

This really is a beautiful wallet... first and foremost, it has become my NEW business card wallet. As an added bonus... exchanging my business card has become an amazingly memorable event...

Do I force or predict a thought? guess a number, word or sketch?

Perhaps I guess something on their business card when I barely looked at it before putting it into my "innocent" looking wallet.

The Outlaw Wallet, HIGHLY recommended!

Gah! You lot of sold me on this. I was thinking of getting Cornelius' Thought Transmitter, but the battery element put me off.

This sounds like a superb wallet and would suit my needs. :D

Why would someone want to examine your wallet?
