When Does One Become a Magician?

Postby Barco » Oct 9th, '07, 14:04

Ok. So, I know I few tricks. Some Variations of this Tricks. Cards, Coins, And D'Lite.
But I know I'm not a Magician. At what point someone is not a Curious Guy, or a "Tricker", and becomes a Magician? Is it necessary to do Magic a way of living? Is it the knowledge? I really don't know.
Thanks!

At the end of the day it doesn't matter. It's just a label.

My guess though, is that when others call you a magician without any prompting - you are, by definitition, in their eyes at least. A magician.

I think it's in the performance of magic rather than the knowledge to be one. After all, with a bit of thought anyone could make a very effective bomb, but hardly anyone's a terrorist

That's a terrible analogy...

Perhaps... a magician, I guess, is a profession... you earn your title.

Or, is it like a category—such as 'a pipe smoker'—whereby to qualify, you must smoke a pipe.

Is a magician someone that performs magic? I guess so.

There's far too many literal translations.

you are a magician when:-

all of your friends introduce you as ......the magician.
you dream of magic tricks.
when theres a party your always invited, even if you don't now the person.
you are comftable looking down the stocking and make up iles in boots.
when many everyday objects take on a diferent life of there own.
when your told someone made a pass at you, you look at there hands and chuckle to yourself.

To take a somewhat synical thought on it....

If you have ever bought yourself a prop and found it useless....and then vowed to never buy another useless peice of magic again...and have stuck to your word.....then you my freind are not a magician.

On the other hand....

If you have ever bought yourself a prop and found it useless....and then vowed to never buy another useless piece of magic again....only to do it again mere hours later......then you my freind are a magician!

I'll go for the performance idea too.

If you do the magic tricks you know for friends and family - or even complete strangers - and leave them with the mystery rather than explaining how your tricks are done, you're a magician.

If you have a bike, you're not a cyclist until you start peddling. :)

I might come down to how serious you take magic.
When I was learning magic early on, I knew and could do a number of tricks. But being able to do some tricks didn't make me a magician. I also played tennis but I wouldn't say I was a true athlete. I take pictures but I'm far from a photographer.
The label magician came, I think, once I devoted myself to magic and started performing regularly.
I might be able to sing in the shower, but I'm no singer. Maybe if I put all my efforts into it, and sang outside of the shower, that title would come too.

I remember the exact moment I realised I was a magician. I had been doing magic for quite a while and taking it very seriously sometimes with good results and sometimes with not so good results.

Then one day I was watching a magic society show with lots of magicians on the bill. I looked around and realised that I was part of the scene. I realised then that I was a magician and it gave me a strange feeling at the time. I thought, "I am just like these people. I am a magician!"

Don't worry or even think about it. It will creep up on you when it is ready to do so.

Once you submit your soul to C.U.P.S...

(I'm just bitter with myself over my last $210 purchase).
