Help with connecting my PS3 to the internet

Postby cymru1991 » Oct 6th, '07, 19:55

Can anyone help me with connecting my PS3 to the internet? I use a speedtouch ADSL modem that has two "holes" in the back of it. One has a cable running into the internet socket in the wall, the other has a permanent USB cable which runs into the USB port in the back of my PC. Now my question is how am I meant to connect my PS3 into this setup? Do I need some kind of router, or can I simply take the USB out of the back of my computer and plug it into the USB port on the front of my PS3? I know by doing this that my computer will not be connected to the internet, but does it have to be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

PS. I have a second duplicate modem that I don't use. Could I just plug the ethernet cable into the back of the PS3, connect it to the modem, then plug the USB end into the back of the PC?

God it's confusing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need a Router.

Or better still, a new Modem/Router.

They can be picked up for less than £25 (try aria.co.uk)

The Router/Modem combo allows:

1. computer-less, always on, maintained internet connection... a tiny 'computer' inside the unit does all the login/connection

2. Sharing the connection with multiple machines

If you get a wireless one, your PS3 won't need wiring up to it, as it has built in wifi.

That's how I've set it up, anyhow, and it works great!

Thanks. I think that we're getting wireless internet soon anyway, so once that's sorted then I'll take it from there. Thanks again

Or instead of a router you could set up Internet Connection Sharing. This can be done buy going to Network Connections > (Right Click Your Connection) > Properties > Advanced then check enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). BTW - Make sure you plug your ethernet cable into the back of your PC. Then just go through the PS3 connection setup.

Should have got a 360 though

I've always been a playstation man, so I never thought about changing . The PS3's an expensive kit alright, but I'm not complaining. :D

Gotta admit the Wii is better than the PS3 solely because of the Mario games. However i just hate the controller concept (which ruins the game play for me) and the graphics aren't up to the new generations standard.

Anyway everyone has their own preferences :D

Don't judge the graphics on the back of wii sports as thats just showing what the controller is like and what you can do with it, If you really want to see the standards of the graphics you should look at the legend of Zelda: Twilight princess, its amazing

My step-brother owns a Wii and he has Zelda, which i've played and i thought it was half way in between the graphical capabilities of the last gen and the new gen. Just compare it to any game on the 360.

However because of the power of the Wii, the games will never reach the graphical or physical potential of that of the PS3 or 360. I do realize that the main aspect of the Wii was the revolutionary controlling system (which the PS3 tired stealing and made a complete hash of it  ) and not the sheer processing power of it.

Personally i would buy one if it had a normal bloody controller  Just because of some of the great titles - Mario and Zelda!

We should start a thread 360 vs PS3 vs Wii

I wandered out into town yesterday feeling a bit bored and picke dup some stuff. A new book, some gardening gloves and some nice bendy forks from Woolies. Oh, and a PS3 on impulse. I've been meaning to get one for ages and a lazy sunday arvo seemed like just the right time, plus Mrs Bronz was at work so she couldn't tell me not to.

Connecting it to the internet wirelessly was the easiest thing I've ever done, literally nowt more than scanning for the router like any other bit of wireless kit. I was playing Call of Duty 3 online within about 5 minutes of setting up the machine, I kid you not.

I can't agree. We got Zelda, Splintercell, WiiPlay, WiiSports and Spiderman 3.

I couldn't see much difference between the graphics of the 1st gen Xbox and the Wii, if I'm honest with you.

But, the PS3, now there's something to behold... great framerate, innovative design, immersive gameplay.

Agreed, old-skoolers who REMEMBER systems such as the NES, Spectrum, MSX, C64 etc. will realise that what makes a great game isn't so much the graphics but the gameplay.

Granted: Zelda seemed impressive at first glimpse, but was nothing totally out of the ordinary... same style, graphically and game-play-wise—even to the tune of it seeming old-fashioned.

The thought that this is the best they could do as a 'milestone' release for their next-gen console was the core of my disappointment. Add to that the fact that the dodgy control system with the Wiimote and Nunchuck made the whole premise of '3D spatial control' seem more an afterthought than a building block.

I am sure there are die-hard Wii fans out there... but if you're looking to move on to the future of gaming, the Wii isn't cutting the mustard just yet...
