New here and got a few questions

Postby Grim » Oct 11th, '07, 04:21

So basically i dont really know where to post anything yet and ive got a few questions un-related to tricks. I dont know if this is a good place to post them but here goes!

1) I need a metal deck case. Where could i find one? What kind of local stores might carry them? Any online sites?

2) My local magic shop just went out of business. Ive been going there for nearly 10 years and now im not sure where to go to check up on new tricks and/or replace my old ones. Can someone please supply me with a few reliable/good sites that have a good stock and reputation?

Hi there Grim... firstly, where are you from?

You ask about "local" resources and that can differ greatly for most of us here in that we are from all over the world...

A Metal Card Box... I don't know why you need such a critter but I've found that rumaging through Antique Shops and Craft Stores such as the big Fabric stores (JoAnn's, Michaels, etc.) can deliver a very wide variety of neat, inexpensive boxes... Pier One Imports is another great source.

Finding effects is also very easy... look at the bottom of the forum lists and you'll find a bunch of ads representing many of our members and their offerings. Too, you will find people talking about effects and offering links to resources. Sadly, the day of the old Brick & Mortar Magic shop seems to be in the wane and very few still exist. Here in the states Abbotts and I believe Magic Inc in Chicago are about the only two not changed or geared down... Tannen's in New York has seemingly gone to the whey-side, no longer coming near the source it was during the days Lou and/or Tony were running things... Owen's of course, is still by appointment only and make certain you bring a juicy check book with you before calling... same kind of applies to the other major builders in the states.

Denny & Lee's is in the process of closing down the east coast store and working almost exclusively on line along with their Vegas "let's nab the tourist" location. Stevens, who I've done business with for years, holds its own via mail order and working the conventions like crazy and the same can be said for Hank Lee's in Boston.

So that's the gist of life on that front...

Hope I've not scared you off...you'll find good people here and tons of resources.

No, it sounds great. Im really liking this site. Im in Colorado but when i said local i meant store like Peir One Imports. Stores that are fairly common across the US. Thank you for the info!

*Oh also, im still in school and im always carrying around a deck of cards. I doing so, the regular paper deck case is always getting torn up and shredded, whether from use or just simply having it on me.

Do you mean the metal collector style tins that decks can come in?

I think he's thinking of a metal card guard, most magic shops will stock them. Sorry though, I can't help with any US based magic sites I'm afraid. I mainly use NUMS, magic box and cards 4 magic over here in old Blighty

If you are in Boulder, it does not have very good magic suppliers as I recall. The on-line world has taken over, try the Magic Depot, Stevens Magic Emporium, and Hank Lee...they all provide good service, even for international shipping here to the UK.

For card guards, I would recommend the Porper product. I have yet to hear a bad word about that clip.

As far as cyber-shops goes...I'll PM you.

Mike.
