The Passion

Postby GoldFish » May 11th, '04, 11:50

Ok, first off I want apologise to anybody who may think that this is a thread about that Mel Gibson film, because it's not. Instead, lets talk about the passion of magic!

Recently, I've been putting my famed ( ) skills of observation into action and witnessed some rather heated debates about everything except the thing we come here to talk about. Generally the root of these arguments comes from the great love of magic that the opposing parties have. However, they are still argueing about ultimately trivial things, taking potshots at each other and being generally childish. Now I'm not having a go or anything like that but I do think that we need to try and maintain the focus of why we use this forum.

Sometimes we get side tracked with trying to better ourselves or prove a point and sometimes these "battles" use all the fury of our passion for magic. Can we try and use that fury in a positive way and express our opinions with constructive critisim and tolerance of others. Try and remember that for the vast majority of the users of this forum magic is simply a hobby or past time and I'm sure that even the working members of our online community don't benefit from these little "tiffs".

Lets just remeber why we're here...

"Talk MAgic: A great place for magicians to chat!"

All the best,

Will Wood

This is not a forum for self promotion or promotion of any particular business interests or personal gain. Self glory, aggressive ego, posturing, chest beating, product placement, promotional considerations, acting as an agent or indirect representative of a commercial venture or anything of this nature is NOT on, no matter how temping. This should also include pissing contests and showboating.

i have dutifully taken note and will not mention magicdiscoservices or its subsiduaries ie me at any time and will not talk about, when I'm doing a gig i have noticed that, as you rightly say self promotion should be kept out of the topic, magicdiscoman rules, 10% discount for talk magic members.

i will in future keep my mind on the task in hand and not enter any kind of competitions, i hearby abmonish myself and promise not to do it in the future.
mdm crosses all fingers and toes honest i will.

lol
Yeah magic has been lacking a tad lately, I have to agree and I am just as guilty of not posting anything of any real quality or interest for a long time as the next man. For me the reason is a total change in the kind of magic I am learning (making me a newbie who would rather read than chat about it at the moment), others will have different reasons, such as life stuff :)

I think we need to be a little measured here though chaps, we don't want to get into a position where we are telling Scott Guinn, for example, that his links to his website are out of line.

I don't think for a second anybody would do that but if we are going down the line of any magi who has a product to sell or indeed a supplier is looked down upon for making a living (be it by trying to help or by trying to promote) then we have some working pros here that would suddenly be affected by unwritten rules and they are such a positive to the forum that just can't be right, can it? If we are jumping on anything connected to a shopping cart at some point then to be fair that is what must happen.

I am honestly not trying to reopen the blood thread or it's views I hope you all know me better than that. I just don't sit well with this "This is not a forum for self promotion or promotion of any particular business interests or personal gain" as that means boywonder must now stop selling his wands, seige may have to release a book without me knowing (couldn't stand that chaps), Nick can't mention his shop, MagicDiscoMan must now pretend he is a gas fitter and poor old Tom (yeah right, is it warm enough there Tom?!) would have to be quiet about his rather lovely tricks.
Think it through chaps, some advertising is not only workable but also helps people we have grown to like as friends and they will be limited.
Like real life, some adverts are great, some make you want to hurt your TV, let's not make any restrictions that we can't live with without being two-faced or at the very least bitter :)

Now, back to magic, please, for a group of people who work with and manipulate people you could be forgiven for thinking we didn't know NLP had been invented sometimes ;) When we answer people can we do it kindly, I always say never say anything to anybody in a way you wouldn't say it to their face, so let's remember our language skills when we type to each other chaps. That is not aimed at this thread btw or indeed any one person, sorry but the blood thread was locked and it had to be said :)

/me hands the soap box back :)

btw HAPPY TUESDAY!

Well said everyone.

As far as promotion is concerned our only real problem is with people who turn up once just to promote their own stuff, or people who might be given an incentive to promote a particular dealer. As far as saying that you have had a good experience of one dealer is concerned that is no problem, nor stating that an effect is exclusive to that dealer, or notifying members of promotions by a dealer as long as that promotion does not directly benefit the poster.

So effectively we don't have serious problems with existing members telling us what they are doing as long as it isn't a blatant plug for it.

I'm sure if I've got anything wrong the other admin will speak up!
