Bizarre effect

Postby bmat » Oct 17th, '07, 17:46

Awhile ago I got a really nice hour glass in which I can make the sand stop flowing at any point. So I've been working on routines dealing with time. Do you think its overkill if I make the time stop in the hour glass and also have time go backwards on say a watch or clock? I'm worried that making a watch/clock go backwards will actually be a let down as clocks are so mechanical that it would be obvious. What do you think?

If you are making the sand stop, wouldnt it make more sense in just stopping a watch, which would probably be a lot easier (and you can borrow the watch).

I think the sand is more appropriate for the setting and actually making the sand stop is quite a simple matter for me. But in your question you may have given me an obvious answer, would I even be wearing a watch in the setting I wish to create unless I can stop everyones watch which would be great but it may really * people off if they don't start again.

I'd just stop the watch, why would the watch go backwards if time's stopped afterall?

For what its worth I would agree, unless the sand can go back up the glass  it makes no sense the watch going backwards. I think that would be a great effect if you are using the sand timer to time a differant effect and it 'stops' and you leave it for a spec to notice and then you ask to see their watch which has also stopped (or stops as you cover the face and ask them, 'wouldnt it be freaky if time has really stopped?) Then reveal the watch stopped. I like it, where do I buy my sand timer? 8)

Thanks for all the replies, they are all very helpful. Yes the watches should just stop, no need for them to go bacwards, problem comes in that then they should all stop for it to make sense. So I will probably just scrap the whole watch idea. No I cannot make the sand go backwards. As far as I know the effect is not marketed in what I want to do. I believe the hour glass is available my wife found it on ebay. As usual I did something with the instructions but can't remember what, (not that they were of any use) but I'll try to find them to see if I can find who made it. But thats a long shot.

My first inclanation was to time an effect as was suggested here. But the bizarre part of me, the part that wants to create a new religion decided that I wanted to go farther then that and create a routine centered around time.

Just to clarify, I meant stopping the watch AND the sand (rather than stopping one and having the other go backwards. After re-reading my post, I realise it sounds like I was suggesting to only stop the watch.

At the same moment the sand stops... your pulse stops!

Best to you-

Instead of having everyone's watch stop, you could invite a spectator or two up to the front, and say that the area surrounding the mystical hourglass (or whatever) is prone to 'time slips'. So therefore only those close to the object are affected, as only they are caught in the little pocket of inter-dimensional activity.

Or something like that :)
