Do we have any Apple bruddas in da house?!?

(Translation: Do we have any Apple fans on TM?)

The new Mac Operating System, OS 10.5.0, aka Leopard, comes out tomorrow!

Anyone else as superexcited as I am? The new iChat looks great, as does the new desktop and finder. As does everything else.

I have NO life whatsoever.

Seige = Mac user since mid 80s.

Leopard = not a great deal new or 'revolutionary' since Tiger. Got my pre-release copies (yes, us legit businesses with more than one computer do it properly!) on order. Bummed tho, because I hear many people received their copies TODAY!!!

Off to the Applestore in Birmingham over the weekend for a sniff too.

If the previews I've seen are anything to go by, it should be cool.

Considering that I earn my bread & butter from my Macs, I may just install it on my Powerbook for now to find out the incompatible apps! Gratefully, it won't be a millionth of the pain of Windoze upgrades.

The new feature I look forward to the most is the new instant previewing... and the Time Machine looks good. Just got two new 500Gb internal SATA drives in my main machine ready for the new Backup features... ooooh exciting.

Now... how many of you remember REAL Mac upgrades... System 6 > 7???

And upgrades... I remember getting my first 20Mb hard drive. What pleasure! No more booting system 6 from Floppy, and having to swap discs to boot applications!

lol FRK

and Seige, I'm too young to remember 6 to 7... however, Im not looking forward to Time Machine because I dont have or need an external drive, and it is basically just a cool look for an external drive. I use iChat a lot, so it should be fun. I'm interested in playing around with Spaces as well, though it seems like F9-11 would work just as well.

You've not done your homework on Leopard! Time machine is much more than a cool look for external hard drives, it's closer to the Holy Grail of backup utilities... and no, you don't need an external... just a partition.

I began using Macs fairly recently, relatively speaking... around about OS8 I think. Much as I love OSX, I do miss the old OS's. Unfortunately my old Mac knackered up and I lost a lot of information, but what can you do.

I've had no real problems with the new ones, however, but I won't be upgrading to Leopard, not just yet anyway. I'm waiting for a good few more upgrades when the difference will be significant enough to warrant getting a new Intel.

Still the Classic for me. I just the new 160Gb model. I just couldn't cope with only 16Gb for the touch... no matter how cool it looks.

I use the iPod for transporting work around, in my car (I have a Pioneer interface), for pleasure of music on the go etc.

In fact, currently, I have 84Gb of work on my iPod, 22Gb of video, and 31Gb of Music.

Amazing how fast if can get filled up... my previous model was an 80Gb... and I coped with that just fine!

I've mentioned here before that I am an apple addict. I still have an Apple 512k in the loft—with the Apple team signatures moulded on the inside. Nostalgia!
I'm also the proud owner of a Newton from the early 90s. It's my pride and joy—as I can firmly lay claim to having a 'cool PDA' before most yuppies even knew what one was!
I also still have an original 'Bondai' iMac, with the 'puck' mouse, and even COOLER still, I have still got an unworn Apple T-shirt from the first expo I attended.

Not that I am an Apple geek, but due to my job they've always been a part of my life. And unlike any PC owner I've ever met, I can safely say it's a joy to work with computers every day.

Much as I try, I just cannot part with the stuff. It's part of my upbringing nearly. And I get quite excited about new computers, new OS etc.

Now... show me someone who still has their first PC in storage ;)

(Oh, and by the way, Intel rocks. Do it now. Otherwise, you're missing out on sooooo much more power and coolness!)

C64 isn't really a PC... back in the days, it would be more considered a games console with a keyboard!

By PC, I'm talking big beige boxes full of fresh air and 5" diskette drives. :D

I do a lot of travelling. And do a lot of night-out stays.

With the aid of an AV cable, my iPod becomes a feed to the hotel/b&b TV set, and I have access to TV/Video episodes.

And, I often find myself using the address book/contacts.

Syncing the iPod to the Mac is a joy. And with my new super-gig model, things just get better and better.

I was actually going to start a thread about mac the other day. Im considering buying a new (and my first ever) macbook for my next computer in about a month and had a few questions. Like... is it easy to use, like a pc? Will i still be able to use the same wireless internet connection as the computer i am using now? And if someone sends me a file from a windows office program, and i have the apple mac version of the program, will i still be able to read it? These probably seem like stupid questions before but i wanted to make sure before i go and spend my cash!

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...

Macs are a lot more straightforward and intuitive than PCs... you'll be up and running in a few minutes and after that it's all so simple. If I recall rightly the only instructions they come with nowadays are how to set the thing up.

And with Intel, you'll be able to run Windows on your Mac. Not just Virtual PC - the actual operating system. In any event I've not had a problem opening Windows files and that. There's also always Open Office and Neo Office, both available for free download.

In order:

1. is it easy to use, like a pc?
Easy? Not only easy, but slick, friendly and much more pleasurable. Consistent uniform interface across applications, consistency in menus... this is the GUI that the world should use. PC users rarely look back after using a mac.

2. Will I still be able to use the same wireless internet connection as the computer I am using now?
Yep. Only much easier. Turn the Mac on, it will hunt the network down and prompt you to connect. Job done.

3. And if someone sends me a file from a windows office program, and I have the apple mac version of the program, will I still be able to read it?
Well, Apples' iWork costs about £60, and will open any† Microsoft office document.
Failing that, there's NeoOffice, which is free, and rocks.
Both iWork and NeoOffice compared to MS Office are like comparing the Space Shuttle with a paper aeroplane... †

†I won't slate MS Office too much... it's great for pro's who are so stuck in their ways thinking that Productivity = Microsoft and Graphics = Mac. They'll never wake up and smell the coffee.
Almost any OFFICE Windows format opens on a Mac. Except Proprietary formats, for specific 3rd pary apps.
However, the new Macs quite happily run Windows as a parallel OS. So, you have one machine running the best of both worlds. Enjoy!
