An idea for a gathering.

Hi, still new to magic (6 months maybe) but enjoying it all, learning lots, not least from this fine forum. Anyway, what would people think about a weekend conference/familty holiday with outdoor activities to try and places to see. The magicians can attend workshops during the day or do the activites with their families and have combined presentations/ entertainments etc in the evenings.

I've worked in the outdoors for nearly 10 years and have had some very good experiences, ones that would be good to share with the magic community.

One of the things that is apparent through TM is that without the support of our families (the rolling of eyeballs and the 'yes dear' that are starting to appear when I start enthusing), it would be more of a struggle shall we say?

Anyway, just a random thought, I haven't been to a conference yet so I don't know. It may be your idea of hell but hey, let me know what you think and if responses are good I'll put some more thought into it.

Ta muchly

when you have venues and priceings sorted let me know and if you have chance check my site out, sounds like a potential good idea, outward bounding for mages.

Sounds like a really nice idea to me, I'd be interested. And as you're in Kendal why not adda little windsurfing on the lake in there too, just for fun :D

Yes, that's totally possible. So is wakeboarding, water ski-ing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, abseiling, going for a walk in the hills, caving, you name it really. Surfing might be a little harder but nothing is impossible, as we all know.

Anyway, keep the thoughts coming in.

It is fun, Lady of Mystery, although there's quite a steep learning curve. You may spend a fair amount of time in the beginning face planting. Whether it's in the final programme or not would all depend on numbers and how much people are willing to spend. Again, it is in the 'early days' part of planning.

I used to work at the YMCA National Centre which has conference facilities and all the outdoor kit and instructors that we'd need. I am also sure there would be a few budding magicians in the instructional staff.

Again, because I'm new to the magic community, my thoughts are mostly about the activities for people to do and the residential side of things, the outcomes being shared time with families, making new friends, trying some new things and sharing magic.

Do you know what sort of criteria would need to be fulfilled before you came to an event such as this? Would you want to run a workshop or just attend? Also, I don't want to step on anyones toes here. It would be an addition to the convention programme, not a rival. Any advice on this would also be welcome.

By the way, if anyone is interested in doing the kind of activites I've talked about, I'm more than happy to sort something out and share an experience with you. (Hope this does not break any forum rules, I don't want to offend!)

Ta muchly, again, for your informative and entertaining chat

nice idea

Sounds like a great idea, of course as with all things it is cost relative. My wife hates and has no understanding of magic so I would come with my son 8) He is 17 and interested in magic, infact he is better than me but dont tell him  mixing outdoor activities with magic lectures etc would be a good balance. It would be good to have lectures on presentation and that sort of thing as well.

Thanks Trickyfied, I also thought that partners of magicians could also get together, 'magic widows and widowers', or is that a really bad idea. At the very least she could combine it with a visit to the Lakes, best gingerbread shop in the world in Grasmere, Beatrix Potter etc.

I just have to mention that this is all just an idea at the mo, two or three years maybe. I'd certainly like to have built up a bit of a standing amonst the community before attempting it. I also need to go to a few conventions and meet some other magicians and for yourselves to get to know me (and work on my performance as well)

However, keep the thoughts rolling in. Maybe you'd like to help organise, or maybe you've tried to before and had a 'mare of a time. Or have you seen this kind of thing before? A newbie to magic coming in with his fancy ideas, all enthused?

Let's see what happens, eh?
