dont knock it, until youve tried it...

ive always heard the best secret in magic is to involve specs...

i never tried it at school because i could never trust them until luchtime today...

i started off with a classic pass to long distance spinner and quite a few people saw it and were intrigued... i then forced a card, got it to second from top, then did a rough erdanese and people were like yeh okay w.e

i did a muscle pass after some little retentions etc and people loved that and when they want to see the coin i do the old 'ill put it into this hand', 'wait its gone' 'it was in your top pocket' lol...

at this point more specs had come so i then did the 2 card monte and the person flipped... and so did everyone around him who was watching.. i was so surprised he didnt turn the cards over premturely and its such a simple trick compared to others i do (i realised since he was holding the cards he enjoyed it)... i then did the long distance spinner with pass again and got them to shout 'shoot', them to shout out the name of the card in mid air (i said it helped to make sure it was there card but of course everyone around would here them and look ;))and then got them to catch it... i realised people loved it when they were involved, instead of a 3 card monte or 'find you card' trick... or even mindbender as it just looks like im showing off... anyway it went down well and so the number 1 rule i now have is...

ITS ALL ABOUT THE SPECTATOR!!!

It sounds like a series of moves rather than actual effects. Good on you for perfoming for real people.

It is indeed a good lesson to learn. It's why a lot of what I do is more about them then it is me.

I would, however, say don't perform if you don't want to. I guarantee you that "the girls" will be more impressed by you not letting yourself get coerced into jumping through hoops for other people. Besides, it's all just a bit, well, cheap and tacky really isn't it.

The great thing about schools (or anywhere you are often at set times) is that you can set stuff up weeks ahead of time and wait patiently until you're asked to do something then produce an 'impromtu' miracle. Just off the top of my head you could shove a card behind a whiteboard or stick it to the underside of a table for a lovely card to impossible location effect, after you've been pestered enough to perform of course!

When you're around the same people every day you can hang on to cards that they've signed and then get them to sign the same value card months or even years later and have yourself the most impossible signed destruction/restoration or card though window for example. Just add patience!

I think this should be recited every morning 100 times.

When I'm studying magic tomes for new effects to learn, I always try to imagine the effect as a spectator and ask certain questions such as:

Is it easy to follow?
Does it seem impossible?
(and most of all)
Is it entertaining?

I tend to avoid gambling routines as many of the people I perform for don't seem to be card players or have an interest in it, so although this is omething that can be entertaining in itself, it doesn't suit my style (as I don't play card games) and I personally find visual, impossible effects and one that appear to be thought reading to be the most entertaining. If it something that I enjoy and find entertaining myself, then I feel that I can perform it with conviction and enthusiam but if I were performing an effect just because it's the 'latest' thing or was overly complex it would come across as someone going through the motions, which is what I think is one of the worst things in entertainment.
