Does this make me a bad person?

Postby TheAlkhemist07 » Nov 30th, '07, 16:43

OK here's the story:
I was passing thru Bolton and popped into the magic shop there to buy a TT.
While there the guy behind the counter was bantering with me about various tricks and Impromptu card effects. He then showed me an awesome card trick and at this point I was new to card magic (and Magic in general to be honest) but I with what little I knew I was able to work it out. It is devilishly simple yet is one of the most amazing effects out; Mainly because it happens in the specs hand.
Am I a bad person cause I worked it out and now use it most of the time but never bought it?

If you were new to magic at the time and sussed it out, then specs have a good chance of working it out too. Doesn't make you a bad person but it's either:
(a) a poor effect
(b) badly performed

Examine your reasons for posting, and ask yourself the question again

Out of interest, what effect was it? And what Tomo said is good. Is it playing on your mind? Do you feel guilty when you use it?

 see you in hell!! nah im kidding but if you worked it out due to his performance, let him no so he can improve it... if there was nothing wrong with his performance, then it cant be the best effect if you'd only done a little card magic and still worked it out... but hey if it works for your specs, then its fine i guess... :D

bah humbug...

Thats it I dont know the name of the effect and it does haunt me at night
And the reason its good is its so devilishly simple but relies on something specs probably cant even consider but because I knew of some card sleights I could see thru it.

Stealing a marketed item may not make you a horrible person but it is a horrible act. In this day and age you are lucky that there is a brick and mortar magic shop within your area that you can just go and drop by, they are getting few and far between. You should probably be supporting them rather then stealing from them, (I'm assuming that he was showing you an effect he was trying to sell and not just showing off behind the counter).

The other night I was watching a comedian and he was doing a fantastic routine. I figured out all the words and the timing and now I'm using it. Is that stealing? (no, I did not really do that).

In the end you can only be your own moral compass. How others judge you is soley based on your actions. As previously implied, the fact that you made the post tells me that somewhere along the line you know the answer to the question, and you are probably looking for positive re-enforcement to clear your guilty mind. Or you really had nothing else to discuss and wanted to start some sort of debate that has been debated over and over again. I'll probably get blasted for this post because it is nothing that anyone who steals wants to hear, blast away justify your theft but don't look for my rebuttle. As this post stands on its own. Agree, disagree, its up to you.

And yeah, I'll probably be joining you in hell. But odds are it won't be for stealing.

Alkemist07 writes, in part: "Am I a bad person cause I worked it out and now use it most of the time but never bought it?"

Of course not!

Either he did it poorly, or the trick is simply a poor one.

If it's the latter, watch out -- you may be falling into the trap yourself.

If it's the former, it's his problem, not yours.

Either way, don't worry about it.

It may not have been poor handling, the guy is very good having visited the shop a few times i've seen him work.

If I'd never bought Bill Malones on the loose Vol 1 I'd' not own the material to perform Sam the Bellhop effect but guess what? I know a little about card magic and can work how its done using this knowledge. And I'd say Bill's Handling is the best for this effect and its not shabby on that video :)

As for using that effect? Ask him where it was published and if it's in a book buy the book, you'll doubtless get lots more usefull things out of it.

Malone's version of Sam the Bellhop isn't just in a book; he also published it in the Linking Ring magazine Parade (trick) section, so save your money!
