Mandrake, out of interest, whose DL would you rate most? Moses' or Rasputin's?
Just out of interest, the Red Sea trick, does that use a similar method to the Cloudbusting trick as mentioned by Serge in a thread called "Magic Stars"?

A quick question if I may,

Would you prefer applause if this guy was in the audience?

I would have to say the wooping and jumping around seems to be a very american/TV thing.
Alot of the time I usually get giggleing, drooling but mostly just gawking.
Sometimes I do wish when doing magic in "da Hood" that someone would jmp around and shou 'damn man how u do that sh*t this sucka's magic foo!'

then again....

p.s. silence lets you sit there with a big smug look on your face.

VoodMick, I be very happy to answer your questions - but, of course, I'd have to kill you afterwards :D !

That guy in the vid brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, 'Going like the clappers'!

but really I'm being anything other than unresponsive. I'm just keeping it to myself.

I agree completely. No matter the magician, I just can't get over excited and go wild. I just step back smile and compliment the magician sincerely. Theres nothing better than someone who is genuinely nice about your routine.

Carlos75 writes, in part: ". . .you don't always need the American style whooping and jumping up and down. . ."

As a Canadian, I'm willing to take anything that the Americans say or do (or elect<G>) with a grain of salt.

But why, oh why do others INSIST on slamming the Yanks and blaming them for everything? Sure, Blaine and Angel get some pretty weird people "whooping and jumping up and down"; but then so do a lot of Brits and other Europeans.

And why do these performers seem to delight in slamming the Yanks?

It just isn't fair! :!: :!: :!:

A lot of good American men and women, most in uniform but many not, died so that these same bozos could slam them.

cheers,

Peter's quite right, only the 'extreme' and 'cult' performers seem to get/arrange for the OTT publicity. I've seen a lot of vids of David Copperfiled, Lance Burton and similar professionals and there's not a lot of audience whooping and jumping, just a lot of happy, genuine applause from well entertained audiences made of of 'normal' people - just like thee and me  !

All this whooping and yelling proves they need a good old Empire to keep 'em under control!

Since this has derailed somewhat... I'll add to it.

A couple of years ago I would have taken offense to the US bashing.

Then I started half joking about moving to Canada for the health care alone. I joked that in America you get a free lawyer but in Canada you get a free doctor- sounds like the US had corruption on the mind from the beginning. I also joked that Canadians have the extra benefit of not sinking a ton of money into their military because everyone in the world knows that if you attack Canada that the US will hand your ass to you.

Then I started to believe it more and more. It didn't help when I watched Michael Moore's Sicko. I can't stand Michael Moore or his approach but he seems to hit the nail on the head more than he smashes the hammer to the wood. Now I'm seriously looking to move to Canada, UK or... and now I feel REALLY unpatriotic... France. Freedom Fries?!?

We desperately need to get out of a 2 party political system.

Anyway, so long as the crowd isn't heckling then all is good in my book. Even then I've seen performers make it work for them, especially in the comedy clubs. I have noticed that in some groups there will be an alpha-male type. However he acts is generally how the rest of the group will act.

Not me. I'm a vegetarian who watches 70's sitcoms on DVD.

Back to the topic, thankfully we do get less whooping over here but I think these street magicians choose their specs wildly. I was performing at a private party recently and a very religious chap insisted I was using the "devil's power" and was quite shocked by it. I was accused by him of witchery and suchlike which made me wish I had bought the Witches Almanac to end the evening off with.
The rest of the crowd found this man's accusations quite funny and goaded me to show him more. It was fun but scary and he did insist my performance was due to some occult power.
In the end, to save an argument, I confessed to him that sponge balls ARE the work of the devil and the chop cup is a hellish tool and I would change my wicked ways.
