Apple i-Phone

Postby TheAlkhemist07 » Dec 7th, '07, 20:05

Well finished work yesterday and had time before the train so I went to try out the i-Phone. Its good, you can really access the internet and everything, but, well I visited this forum and the font was the size of this full stop.
Not really very practical.
Anyone got it?

A USA colleague had one of these earlier this year and we gave it the once over. Nice idea but it seems to be an I-pod with phone etc added afterwards and, as I only need a phone to make calls and send TXT messages, all those extra features meant diddly squat! Nice idea and the design/operating systems seem very smooth, just not my sort of thing.

Nice idea and looks like a very sexy bit of kit. But the internet on a device with a screen size of six square inches or so, is not going to be the most practical thing I think.

I was looking at a demo model in an O2 shop last weekend. A great piece of innovation but not practical.

The internet browser was a pre-programmed demo which made out that the content was lightning quick to load and was practically large. I doubt (and as suggested in another post) that this is actually the case.

My iPod is my most used gadget but I don;t need a phone or anything else on it for that matter.

never liked the i-pod, thought it was as bland as kwiksave white bread...

dont see the point in buying a phone that'll cost you as much as an xbox 360 and lcd telly... :)

but that's just me...

The other point is that at the moment it's only on O2 and the lowest price tarriff is over £40 a month so unless you're really using he phone a lot, it will be an expensive gimmick for a while. Check in 12 month's time when they're being given away free with Pay as you Go tarriffs!

The iPhone *will* live up to the hype when it becomes 3G (which is faster than it's current EDGE data) and when some of the more expected aspects of a 'smartphone' arrive...

1. GPS unit... my iPaq is a phone, a smartphone, and it has GPS... which is fantastic
2. The iPhone *NEEDS* a decent camera. At the very least it needs to be able to make video calls... think iChat on your phone... neat!
3. It needs more storage capacity...
4. It needs to be cheaper
5. It needs to be a little more open-source
6. It must be universal

etc. etc.

I've always been an Apple early adopter... as said before, I do believe I was amongst one of the first UK owners of an iPod. And yet, much as I love Apple's stuff, the iPhone just isn't 'smart' enough a smart phone just yet.

Oh, as for the web browser... it's 'real' internet, pages appear as they would on a regular monitor... the Safari browser on the iphone doesnt work like most 'phone browsers' and show truncated content... it shows the REAL page.

The reason the type you saw was so small was probably because you'd not 'pinched' to zoom in.

I've seen the interface working, and tested it out... it's as fast as it appears in the ads. Bear in mind that the internet is accessible by WiFi, and at a good connection speed, you'll be surfing no slower than on your laptop or desktop machine.

Anyone who remembers sub-19k modems will appreciate the finer things in life... i.e. to have a picture appear full-screen in less than 10 hours is a blessing!

Mrs Pudding wanted one for Chrimbo (even though we can't get O2 where we live in the middle of nowhere!)... When she tried it in the Apple shop she found that the touch screen didn't respond to fingernails. Can't be used with a stylus either, apparently, which makes it virtually useless for ladies with nails! Suggested she could cut them... shins still hurt!

I went for the LG Viewty instead and do not regret the choice for a second. Not only is it cheaper than an iPhone, but it has 3G and video capabilites.

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...
