What false counts / shuffles should I know?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I think her is referring to things like

The Zarrow Shuffle is a vernon and I believe Fancis and it is very Useful in Effects like "triumphant" so thats a good one

The Zarrow Shuffle is oddly enough generally credited to one Herb Zarrow, and I am sure the effect you are referring to is "Triumph" and is one of the more well known card effects amongst magicians. I think maybe seige finds it hard to believe that someone with hundreds of books on magic would make mistakes like this.

Also it seems unlikely that someone with 20 years experience in magic would not remember the name of the Biddle Count (I assume this is the 'card steal count' that you refer to.)

If you are new stay the heck away from Expert At the Card Table. Just my opinion but the book is so dry and does not explain things in a manner that is condusive to learning. Royal Road or better yet get Mark Wilson's course in Magic. And by all means learn an effect why put all that work into a move you may never use?

I agree. Some people (Simon Lovell being one) thinks Erdnase couldn't even do a bottom deal because the explanation for his version is so rubbish. Obviously that's meant to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I was going by memory, I believed that the Shuffle was credited to zarrow but was "developed" in huge part to "John Hammond " Vernon, Larayne and i believed francis, But its from memory, I could wrong,

THe story as i remember it was, Zarrow witnessed a trick by hommand and larayne and tried to figure out the effect and came up with this method as his solution, which apparently wasnt the solution hommand and larayne used, then hommand and francis asked zarrow to show him the shuffle and didnt catch on, he showed them once and said "what did you think" the shuffle was so effective that he then continued to use the shuffle and eventually published it. Thats what i remember, but again its been years since ive heard it..... I could be wrong

Example of a similiar situation is the marlo Tilt, Credited to One Ed Marlo but was actually invented by Dai Vernon, The "depth illusion" so.. sometimes the backround story is alot different then the foreground, no?

Once you've mastered controlling a card with an overhand shuffle and can perform a false riffle shuffle in which every card returns to it's original position you've got every shuffle you'll ever need . Of course you could learn a one handed faro but I'd recomend getting out more, its just card mast*****ion.

No it's not in RRTCM, it's quite an advanced thing. I think Zarrow himself did a video on it which is still available on dvd somewhere. Possibly through L+L, maybe someone else can shed more light?

Whilst it's nice to have a huge myriad of false shuffles, they all generally serve the same purpose. Learn to contol top and bottom stock, and retain whole deck. It's better to learn a couple of false shuffles really well than loads badly.

I love false counts personally, there are so many decent tricks you can do with them. If you know the Elmsley count, learn the Jordan as well, the two go hand in hand really well. I also really like the Biddle Steal/Load. One of the Card College books has a decent chapter on false counts, but I've left my copies at uni and so can't tell you which one. There's probably a contents list online somewhere.

Oh, and if you like false counts, look on youtube for a performance of Ed Marlo's 6 card repeat. Love that trick.

You can find the Zarrow Shuffle everywhere. I can't remember where I first saw it but it's definitely in "Weapons Of The Card Shark" (should that be Sharp?) and all sorts of Poker Cheat videos knocking around the internet. PM me if you're stuck and I'll have a root around in the draw.

Being new to magic I need some guidance on which card shuffles / false counts etc I need to learn in order to master the more advanced card tricks. Are there any false counts or shuffles that are used more frequently than others?

I master the elmsley count quite ok - but what else is nessecary to learn? Thought I'd might as well have a crack at them now since I have to learn them at one point or another anyways....

I'd strongly suggest you pick up a copy of a wonderful (and less expensive than the other suggestions, though you'll want those too at some point) book called "Cuts, Counts, Moves and Subtleties," by Jerry Mentzer. It's generally available for less than $10 U.S., and really one of the great values in card magic books, in my opinion.

Weapons of the CardShark is good for false shuffles. It teaches the Zarrow among lot's of other, and in my opinion, better false shuffles. But the Zarrow obviously has it's uses.

But he also goes in depth about lots of other gambling techniques such as false deals, stacks and switches and therefore it's probably not the best just for learning false shuffles.
