Card Flourishes - help

Postby jamwig » May 20th, '04, 00:04

Hi Guys.

Here is a cool video I found online. There are some wonderful flourishes in here that I want to learn - can anyone tell me what they are called/where I can learn them?

http://st2.fju.edu.tw/%7Ea9031055/media ... o_high.wmv

The flourishes I don't know are for the reveals of the following cards:
5, 6, 9, 10 J
and obviously - the multiple cut he does just before revealing the 2!

Thanks for your help... :)

WOW that was amazing. I'm almost 100% sure that that was sped up. Is it me or did that guy have huge hands?
I think working in something with a tiger deck card would have looked really cool, instead of just inverting the colours of the camera at the end

This was a very impressive video but don't get swept away by all the cuts and mixes because they were all false.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to learn these type of flourishes and I don't think that there is one single video that teaches them all. It looks like the magician had created that little routine from various different sources e.g. i recognised alot of the cuts, namely Daryl's Hot Shot Cut, for one. I suggest you just carry on learning your cuts and moves and create your own flourish routine. Have a look at http://www.handlordz.com

By the way, I don't think that the video had been tampered with tremendously, it is possible to move your hands that fast and smoothly.

All the best,

Will Wood

Extreme Cuts with Keone may be just the kind of thing you are looking for.

What was interesting was that I had been wondering if it would be possible to deal out a whole suit insequence. My kids like me to deal the Jack to Ace of hearts out to the various family members and this video at least showed that the principle is possible.

Hmmm...its got me thinking. And I don't know if his hands were big or not but boy could he spread his hands far!

Sorry to resurect a old topic but I just watched the Vid from the top of the page and that is 100% speed up IMO, I am not saying it is not possible to do cuts that fast because I have seen lots of vids etc.. and my Sybils are getting quite fast, but just look at the way his hands move it looks so unnatural, I also think it has been edited as it looks a bit disjointed at times. Just my 2 cents worth.

This video came up in one of the earlier forums interesting but I think a lot of it is fixed. Have a look at this video on cuts and flourishes: http://home.earthlink.net/~ocb1/cfotd.html

if you want to know how quick its possible for hands to move check out THIS

and just for the record i DONT think anything has been speeded up. To keep a filesize down to a reasonable size one way is to cut the framerate on movies from say 50 fps to 20 or 30fps which would account for the "jerkiness" of the movements.... watch some of De'vos stuff and you'll see his hands move just as quick BUT since the framerate is higher it looks a lot smoother and less like its been speeded up

I saw Emily on lunchtime TV earlier this year doing exactly the same thing and it was just as fast so you can bet the vid hasn't been enhanced in anyway.

Yea that cup stacking is mad, I was looking at it a while ago on the Superhandz site, I nearly wet my self laughing when I first saw it, defo not speed up as all the people in the background are moving normal, but I stick to my guns on the card vid, it just dont look right, also whats worth mentioning is with all of these flourising vids where they do cuts at lightning speed, they never show you when the cards end up all over the floor! I think Sybils etc.. look best when done quite quick but smooth, that way people can see what you are doing rather than just seeing cards shooting about all over the place. As with De'vo that guy rocks at the mo I am learning the flipback and the smooth opener and I have found if you exagerate your hand movements and do it smooth it makes it look a lot faster than it really is.
