Performance tip

Postby bmat » Dec 18th, '07, 21:26

I know hundreds of these tips are lurking about but I thought I would add one of my favorites. I got this from Jeff McBride.
It deals with making the effects your own, creating a unique routine.

Make 3 lists

List A is about your life, all your ups and downs, likes dislikes, whatever defines you.
List B All the effect you think you have up to performance standards
List C All the effects you really like and wish to do but are not up to performance standard.

If either lists B & C are longer than List A then go out and get yourself some life experience. (List A is usually not easy, you really have to dig deep)

Try to match up effects from either list B & C that illustrate the items on list A. This is not easy, but for example sake lets say you've experienced an impass in your life, the linking rings can illustrate this, as it is not possible for a solid to pass through a solid, yet with a lot of work you were able to get past your impass, (ps, I really don't like the linking rings). Basically you are going to create a story of your life through magic.

Obviously if you cannot find an effect on list B you will have to choose one from list C and bring it up to performance standard. The idea of these lists and not simply going out and finding more material is because these lists are effects you know you enjoy. (but possibly just have not had the time to learn)

Another example is ACR. It does not have to be a selected card lost in the deck and poof, oh my god looky here its now on top...praise the lord and pass the burbon. It could however be on mans ability to keep rising to the top despite fates attempts to hold him down.
