Childrens show

Postby Johnny Wizz » Dec 21st, '07, 11:56

I did a show yesterday at a school for 6/7 year olds. My sister in law is a teacher there and had asked me to do this for the second year running.

I did three 20 minute shows in front of seperate audiences of up to 35 children and I had a ball.

I don't do a great deal of childrens magic even though I got in the hobby in the first place by wanting to enetertain my grandchildren.

I did a simple set of a TT vanish, a rope trick I have forgotten the name of but which I bought from Mike Danata, a changing spots on handkerchief trick, I messed about with water in a foo can over a teachers head, a couple of sponge ball tricks, a longish magic colouring book set and finished with D'lites.

I would like to say that everything was perfect - but I will be truthfull instead. I had a couple of hitches but worked through them and my finger flasher failed intermittently but otherwise I was peretty pleased with my performance.

Young children are ready to believe in magic but boy do they have sharp eyes. I put down my colour changing silk carelessly after one performance of the magic colouring book and an eagle eyed boy at the front saw a flash of colour on the inside and shouted out the full secret of how it works! Thats a lesson for the future.

I commend your bravery.. Other than my own children I gave up on kids magic a long time ago as i found it too harrowing!

Nice to see you were caught out by a 6 year old...( see the " are you smarter than an 11 year old" topic)

All i remember from my days with childrens magic is a great comedy routine with an exploding rubiks cube (do todays kids know what a rubik is?) and the hours i spent making balloon animals.

Can you please let me know the one illusion you think gave the "best" reaction, and who knows I may brush off some of the old gear and have another go at childrens magic again.

I actually met Rubik when I worked in the toy industry - I have an original of hi follow up to the cube, Rbiks Snake in its original packaging with his autograph in my loft somewhere.
