I have several Monkey in the middle type setups that i keep ready to go (a range of colours).
During storage, i aways keep these in a clamp so that they are nice and flat.

Recently i have found that once they have been in a pocket for even a short space of time that they "bend" so the two dont stay as one . (This is the best explanation i can give without giving the illusion away)

I thought it may be my stock getting old, so I have opened some new bikes intending to start again. To my horror, all my older unopend bikes seem to have a slight bend to them, and if the pack is bent as one they "pop" to concave in the other direction.

Now, the question is (got there in the end) is my storage to blame (too damp too dry, or do i just have a bad batch of bikes.

Any help appreciated, as I realy like using the monkey as an end to my ACR and im fed up with bent cards.

I think I know what you mean. I've opened fresh bikes before and the deck has had a distinct bend to it. You can manipulate the deck as a single unit and it kind of clicks or pops as it conforms to a uniform bend. When this is the case I just try and wear them in a bit and they soon settle down.

I've also had the 'porper clip' recommended to me by several users on this forum. I've not bought one yet but I will, and I've been assured that it's the tool for the job.

I have never had that happen with any cards. I have a pretty large collection as well. Some I open to remove the jokers if they are interesting enough as I am more interested in the jokers then the actual deck. (okay I really collect the jokers but then don't want to toss the decks). Nor do I use a clamp or any other device. They warp after use but never fresh out of the box. I'd try storing them in some place dry just to be sure. But you could have a bad batch. Sorry I took so many words to say that I don't have a clue.

Temperature is a key factor in terms of bending cards. It's to do with the back absorbing heat better than the front because it's darker, or something like that, and this causes the card to bend. I reckon your body could radiate enough heat to have this effect.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a solution off the top of my head. With decks, it's best not to keep them anywhere to warm/in direct sunlight etc.


On a similar note there's a nice "opportunistic" trick you can do when performing in bright sunlight (in summer preferably) where you tell someone you'll leave there card to one side and at some point you'll bend it without them seeing. I'm sure you can guess the rest. Science is cool.

Im not too worried about the decks, a bit of use and they seem to sort them selves out. Its my monkeys im worried about. (this is starting to sound strange now )

Once your monkey has a bend, it becomes obvious to the spectator.

Assuming that the monkey setup of which you speak is just cards, I'm sure there's no other advice than keeping them flat,and storing them in a dry room. You can buy special card presses, or why not sandwich them in the middle of an old deck.

yes, its a standard monkey in the middle set up, (just cards). Thanks for the help, but as stated in my original post storage is not the problem as my cards are kept in a clamp. I can't seem to find a solution to the warping so I have just been through 45 decks of bikes and sorted the jokers in to warped and not warped piles!
