I've been looking at mobile contracts for my daughter who is a text junkie and even with a little knowledge, it's still no easy job to pick the right plan, despite what you may think. Having gome into most mobile shops over Xmas they ALL were selling packages with free this and free that, including video etc. but not a single one made any mention of a fair useage policy. I doubt if asked that many of the sales people would actually explain what this means in laymen terms.
There is so much jargon as well as hidden extras - I think that it's sometimes all to easy to think that you have one service when in fact you have something totally different.
In this particular instance I agree that the guy should have known better than to use his mobile phone as a PC modem. After all, how many PC's are sold these days without a modem?
I suspect that he will have his bill reduced but will still be stung with a bill for a few thousand pounds. What is disapointing is that the Office of Fair Trading have had a number of attempts to get the mobile phone companies to be more transparent with their billing but little happens.
They're not too different to banks in my opinion, always looking for an opportunity to make money at every opportunity, regardless of whether it's fair or not.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
