Street magic tips

Hey just a quick post to ask ;

Does anyone have some good tricks to add into a street magic routine? Mainly based around cards and coins?

Thanx, will be a great help.

Personally, I've never been fond of this "street magic". In my opinion, it's basically a name for David Blaine type stuff where poor strangers are accosted by people with cards.

However, when I started out, I did actually go out to perform to strangers, and I used things like the 2 card monte, or a small ACR where the card changes in the spec's hand. Basically, anything where the magic is happening in the spec's hand is a winner. Of course, these can be elaborated- for example, how about a short ACR type-thing where the card is places in the card box, which is then, sealed, which is then placed into the spec's hand, and the card THEN returns to the top of the deck?

As for coins, how about a basic retention vanish with a signed coin, which then turns up in the spec's pocket (Bobo contains methods on retention vanishes- I recommend the elusive coin pass- as well as ways of getting coins into specs pockets etc.) One more thing while I remember, how about getting the coin roll down- as that tends to impress people if you want a "flourish"?

If I think of anything else then I'll post again...

Hope this helps. :D

ACR - Ambitious Card Routine. There are plenty threads on the trick dotted around talk magic, if you check out the search function, you should be able to find something on it, it seems to crop up quite frequently.

There are soooo many 'street' or improptu magic tricks available these days. If you don't already have a copy of Mark Wilson's Course in Magic, I would strongly recommend you get a copy, because there's lots of stuff in there, under, and the book will cost you less than a single trick like self tying shoelaces or similar.

As for stand alone tricks, I don't have a great deal, as it isn't really my area, but I've recently been impressed with Masuda's Wow, Palter's Third Degree Burn, Paul Harris' Deep Astonishment II (close-up, not really street magic). Those three alone would set you back around £110, so maybe best get Mark Wilson.

There's a whole weath of self-working coin tricks etc, but again these are quite expensive, and not always available in UK currency, which looks a bit daft if your performing in the UK. If you don't already have a copy of JB Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, that'll set you in good stead for some amazing street magic, and as you mentioned that you've got some sponge balls, many of the moves are interchangable.

There's also a few good DVDs by Jay Sankey, called Amazing Magic and Mentalism Anyone Can Do! (2 volumes) and Anytime, Anywhere which also features impromptu magic. Sankey's stuff is usually top notch, you usually get plenty effects for your money, and he goes into plenty detail in his explanations.

Good luck, and welcome to the board.

Are we talking street magic as in running up to people and forcing them to watch you or will you have a table set up?
If the latter then I recommend cups and balls or a good chop cup routine. Always popular.
If you are unaware of what an ACR is, then I can only assume that you are very new to magic so I recommend getting yourself a copy of The Royal Road To Card Magic and studying that and in the meantime you can impress the laymen with an ID, a Svengali Deck and the likes. A good and impressive close-up effect which is worth having if you're a beginner is coin unique and some thread loops are great for various levitation and telekinesis effects.
I regularly use the ring leviatation in Mesika's Animated Miracles book if the lighting is right.

Thanx guys, will def give some of those a good look.

when i say "street magic" i mean neither running up to people and forcing them to watch or a set up table - i use the term rather loosely, i infact just do tricks to whoever is watching and interested - nothing major, just off the cuff stuff for fun etc.
Im not new to magic by the way, i just dont know terms by name - weird i know.(dont mean any of that to come across arogant or stuck up :))
