Dynamo - Colour Changing Shoelaces... DVD?

Postby MarcLavelle » Jan 3rd, '08, 03:27

well... some may consider this as a rant, more than a review, but a review can have more than one meaning...

I bought Dynamo's Colour Changing Shoelace a week ago, from www.magicmagic.co.uk, price £14.99

I received it this morning... i was a bit puzzled as to why the cellophane rapping was half open... and was even more puzzeled as to why the disk was in a separate sleeve, inside the box itself... anyhow, eager to watch the DVD straight away, as i do with all magic DVD's when i get them, i popped it in my iMac... waited, and then the disk was spat out... tried, and failed again to load the disk... so then i tried my Samsung DVD player, that i got for christmas, and hey presto... it loaded.

My happiness was short run, when the disk froze at the title screen, so i tried 4 or 5 more times, and the same thing happened. I then tried it on my PC, zilch... DVD unreadable... on a portable DVD player... DVD unreadable... i then then had a good look at the disk and case... the insert sleeve in the case was upside down... no biggy, but quite unorganised, the sleeve is also badly cut from normal printing card. the disk seems to be in perfect order, nearly half of the memory is used, and there are no scratches etc on the disk.

Now, I have a large amount of magic DVD's i have bought over the past few years (40+) and i have never come across one that does not work, fresh from the box. on the contrary, this looks, and acts, like it was made in someones basement. Bringing a whole new meaning to underground magic? highly disappointing.

The question is... should i A; send it back, and ask for a replacement, with the risk of wasting time, and more money, for another faulty copy? B; just ask for a refund, loosing out on a nice piece of magic? or should i C; just use the disk to support that dodgy leg on the dining room table?

you thoughts, please...

I'd say send it back and ask for a replacement. It's frustrating, but it's the only solution really? I've had that before in the past, on a similar product and it's annoying :x

I'd send them an email, they're very good in my experience. I've ordered from them once. A largish order of about £100 and they forgot to include one of the decks of Gaff Cards (the £18 ones) I emailed and explained and they sent a replacement a few days later without problem.

Going on about dodgey disks though. I bought at a magic Club auction the Aaron Fisher DVD and when I got it home its the most shoddy looking piece of cr*p that I could knock up on my own (blank DVD, poor printing on the case) and not the best quality play back either. In fact I was convinced it was a pirate copy so I got in touch with the guy who sold it at the auction. Turns out it was the president of the Blackpool Magic Club, we had a good chat and he assured me that its what Aaron was selling at the convention. Fair enough I says and I've kept it, it does have some great material on there but it goes to show that some magicians have very poor levels of quality (product quality, not material contained within)so it could be the case here, either way you need a replacement or refund in your case.

It sounds very much like a faulty disc so a swift word with the supplier before sending it back should establish the best way to go about it. Whilst I appreciate the reasons why you posted this in the review area, the problems seem to be with the disc itself rather than the content so, to avoid complications, I’ve moved the thread into here to encourage other tips and support for you.

That dvd can be a gem. I had a very similar problem, mine disc looked perfect (no scracthes) but constantly skipped and jogged.

One thing about that DVD however, is it is rather expensive for one trick, and also unles you have a certain type of trainer/sneaker, you will be cashing out for another pair!

Great trick if you have the money to follow through with it.

I think my last post was little bit misleading. When i said you'll need a certain type of trainer, what I shoudl have said was..not all types of trainers work. I don't much about trainers and therefore didnt really listen to that section but the average pair of normal trainers is usually suitable.

One other thing, from experiance, walking around with the setup can often screw things up, he doesnt mention this in the dvd, but when i do it, i either make sure im sationary for most of the performance, or if its street magic your after, wear a second pair, and change just before you perform.

Sorry if i couldn't be of more help!
