So what is a Bananafish anyway?

As introductions seem to be the order of the day – I’m Simon Shaw, I’m 44 and unlike many of you I only re-found the magic bug fairly recently, but boy have I got it bad now. I only wish I hadn’t flitted away the past 30 odd years not practising magic. Oh the waste of it all, just think how good I could be if only…

Don’t get me wrong, I have other hobbies – but magic is the main one at the moment. You know you’ve got it bad when you are in the stationers and all you can think about is whether that envelope will fit a poker sized playing card – or if the nice envelope with the window would be suitable for “special Delivery”

I started off buying a lot of self-working items off the internet – more than anything else to impress the daughter of a friend I was visiting in America – but it really grew from there, and now it’s mainly books and dvds I tend to buy more than the tricks themselves. Talk Magic though has proved invaluable for saving money on only buying the “good” stuff, so thank you everyone that has ever made a review or given feedback to an existing review.

I have joint my local magic society – and that works for me very well. They only meet once a fortnight – but the events/lectures are fun, and above all it’s just plain nice to be able to talk about magic to like minded people. The audition was a little nerve racking, but I must confess now, that I look forward to performing everywhere and anywhere I can. I still get nervous, but once I start I just have fun with it.

As for where the name “Bananafish” comes from – well it’s a name I have used for signing artwork and such since I was about 18 and so it just seemed appropriate to use it here. It actually comes from a J.D. Salinger short story called “A perfect Day for Bananafish” – which obviously had an everlasting effect on me.
