Hi, I am new to the forum and have been trying to join for three days. I had to set up another email account to try again and also use a different user name as my original would not activate. At least that made me persevere and read a lot of what is already here, which is very good.

I am an eager newbie at the age of 35. For me it starts of with wanting to be able to pull a coin out from behind my sons ear. He is 13 months old and i have managed to trick him once, you have to start somewhere. For Christmas I managed to obtain a few old pennies, a book by Bobo on coin tricks, a DVD by Ian Kendal on coin tricks and a trick called free will.

The first problem i have come across is getting the coin from hang point into classic palm. my problem is that i am a banjo player and my Index finger has a longer fingernail on it as I use it as a plectrum. that same nail while useful for banjo gets in the way when practicing sleight of hand. I would love to here from anyone with longer nails who likes coin work as to whether I have to chop them or persevere.

Cheers

Jamie

Hey Jamie! Welcome to TM!!

Am just wondering what u mean by hang point? Usually to get into classic palm from just holding the coin is by resting the coin on the middle and ring finger and pushing it into the palm. I'm not really a coin person, am just starting out myself. But that was how i was taught. So maybe you could save your index finger by trying out this way? Hope my description helps. If this is exposure, please remove it mods!

Wouldn't the DVD by Ian Kendal have mentioned something about classic palm?

Welcome to TM :D

As for the classic palm, it's one that takes practice I'm afraid. To put the coin in the palm, I use the index finger to slide the coin down the thumb and into position. It's quite a tricky move at first and does take a while before you can find the right spot to palm it, but keep at it and you'll get there. I've got long nails but don't ever really find them to be a problem, sometimes they can be quite helpful. It can take a while for your hands to get the dexterity and muscles in the right place to put a coin into and hold it in the plam, but you'll get there.

Good luck with it all :D

Thanks for the welcome ladies, yes Ian Kendalls DVD does mention classic palm and I am doing better with my left hand despite being right handed, because on the left hand all the nails are short. I hope my banjo playing helps out with the finger dexterity.

cheers

Welcome.

Just be careful doing magic for infants/toddlers. I once practiced some silly slights for a cousin when she was still in diapers.

Her parents told me weeks later she was still hiding things behind her head and pulling it out amazed - which was cute, until she started trying to hide her brothers' toys in her ear and nose.

On the upside when she grew into pre-teen age she asked for a magic kit for her birthday ;)
