Steve Martin began his carreer as a a magician. At a recent tribute to Steve MArtin Ricky Jay does this amazing trick. It looks impossible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCqNfbWTVEg

Amazingly smooth. Theres something so reassuring about the way he performs!

Isn't that the same magician that was in the movie, the prestige?

Probably. I've never seen it but I know Ricky Jay has been in a number of films.

And that is a very good clip. You can see it a bit clearer in this one with a few extra tricks aswell:

oh I do like that...very much so. The second effect made me double take! And the last is a very good use of a very simple principle :D

Ricky Jay played the part of the magician when the two main characters were the stooges and he also tutored them in the sleight of hand and tricks they did in the film. I understand Ricky also contributed towards The Illusionist as well as many other films where magic is involved, either on camera in a minor role and/or as the specialist who teaches the actors how to be magicians!

It's a great diversion, when a guy laughs oncontrollably like that you immediately look where his eyes are looking. If he's doing a good job he's not looking at his right hand.

Leaving the "between one and ten" criteria until the last minute is quite cunning I think. With retrospect (i.e. a few seconds of self-reflective psychology after watching the video) it is obvious to me why that might dramatically increase the chances of the spectator choosing the number seven.

If the spectator is already thinking of a large number, and suddenly they have to replace it with a number ten or less, then they'll probably choose the only number that . . . well, you see where I'm going.
