I Am Legend

Postby TheAlkhemist07 » Jan 12th, '08, 13:05

Saw this movie last night.
Think 28 days later with a glorious dollop of Will Smith.
Less violent the 28 days but so much scarier.
A must see!

When I first heard that this was coming out, I was terrifically excited to go and see it. In fact, I decided to actually go to the theater for it (haven't been to a theater in over a decade). Then I found out that it was little more than an "Omega Man" remake.

It isn't "I Am Legend" and I don't think that they should have titled it so. I like Will Smith, but I was thoroughly disappointed that this new offering was only a remake of "Omega Man" with a very slightly different twist (in the original, he's trying to kill them all, rather than heal them).

Have you ever read the book?

Ah, well, I'll continue to hope that "I Am Legend" is actually made into a movie sometime in my lifetime.

Mike.

The book is quite superb. I'll be catching the film on DVD.

I havent read the book. But from a summary of it on wikipedia it seems very good but more pessimistic than the film.
Its kinda like Cell by stephen King. Have you read that its a really good book.

The thing they missed in the film (iam legend) was him killing them and so he was the 'freak' and became like the legends of monsters that we have now.

I agree that it shouldn't have been called I Am Legend. Nearly everything about the story was altered, right down to Robert Neville himself. Some elements of the film were done very well, but overall it was a massive disappointment for me, as Legend is one of my all-time favorites.

To be more truthful - it would be that Stephen King's work is more like Richard Matheson's (who came first and is, according to King himself, a major influence).

Don't go by the wikipedia assessment. I disagree that the story is pessimistic, and the wiki synopsis dramatically undercuts the strength of the story. I consider it a masterpiece of modern literature. The interaction between Neville and the dog in the novel is incredibly powerful - the sense of desperation hits you like a hammer.

Michael, I share your hope. By any chance, have you seen Vincent Price's take in the Last Man on Earth? It also deviated from the original, but it had some great elements.

Dont dis the smith.
Being a 90's kid I idolise this man since he was in most action films I saw as a child.
And he can act.
Very well in this film, since there are no balls jokes to fall back on.

I find him arrogant and talentless. What made me really despise him was an appearance on the Des 'O' Connor show where he was so rude, vile and full of himself to our Des that I wanted to jump inside the screen and kick his third-rate Eddie Murphy head in.

The films he is in are popular because of the story and effects. Anyone could play the role and the film would be the same.

I saw this film shortly after it was released at the very back end of last year and was disappointed. Just about worth watching but I wouldn't watch a second time.

Waiting to see Sweeney Todd which looks a lot better.

Yeah sweeney todd looks good.
Also a film called cloverfeild looks quite intriguing. Its about aliens or something.
And for some reason AVP 2 looks good but maybe thats because the first film was so awful!

I enjoyed "Omega Man," but I've never seen the Vincent Price movie. I've been looking for it at local vid stores, though, because I really would like to see it - I only found out about the Price movie recently. I'm a big Vincent Price fan and particularly enjoyed the Edgar Allan Poe series (I'm also a big fan of B genre movies).

Regarding the new offering with Smith, I just figured that since they named it after the book, it would be true to the book.

Fully agreed. I find it to be a terrifically interesting study of role reversal and a look at how social mores can turn the good guy into the bad guy. It is an amazing book.

I was quite underwhelmed by I Am Legend, not much happened until the last 30 mins, no where near as good as 38 days later IMO

I saw this when it came out. I like Will Smith a lot and i think he gave a pretty decent performance. I thought the daytime parts in the empty city were great. Unfortunately it all goes wrong when it gets dark and he is accosted by non threatening, rubbish looking cgi things. Why not just dress people up in latex masks like they used to in the good old days, it almost always looks must better.

I agree with you.

I found the same with "Next"...They say it is an adaptation of a novel by Philip K. Dick, "The golden man".
I don't understand why they quote these authors, as there's so little link with the book...?

I prefer the books.
