Ok i am new here and am wanting to promote my magic to my local community without having to spend much money on it. I was wondering what would be some good ways to get my name out there. I would love some advice. I really would like to start performing close up and birthday parties.

not knowing your location or even geographical country its hard to say but some basic are.
carry around business cards, vistaprint do some free ones (you pay p&p).
ask your local clubs, pubs and organisations if they'd like a freebie magic session as way of an introduction.
get a website and buy some adwords, microsoft do a free comercial setup to get you going, i wish i was getting commission for that recomend.

find out if your local shopping centre or shopping area will let you perform on the street or in a set area, check local counsil laws, free of charge if you can give out business cards.

get friendly with a local coffee place and ask if its ok to demo magic wile having coffee, you can get a lot of bookings by being known localy as that magic man at the coffee shop.

do link exchanges with other websites, good for you, good for them.

get your friends to tell thier friends your avalable to do magic.

thanks for the great ideas. I will defiantly perform at my local coffee shop there is one like right down the street. Oh and I live in the United States, Southern California area. I did do a free show at an arts and literacy festival in my area and handed out some business cards.

I would love some more suggestions,

Thanks a lot

You might just be in time to get yourself into local school's Christmas Fayre events - offer to do it for free (or even offer a 'cut price deal') and make sure your cards get out there.

Booking birthday parties. Go to elementary schools put on a free show, also get in touch with local hospitals. They are always looking for entertainment for children's wards and such. This is for exposure only, don't go looking for a fee to perform at a hospital. The big thing is to get your name and face out there.

You can say almost anything in a paid ad but word-of-mouth advertising is priceless!

First of all, you are not the one singing your praises; it's a (we hope) satisfied customer.

So, the more you perform, the more you perform.

It's that simple.

And it's that difficult!

How true is that....I struggled to get bookings, but once I started getting them I struggled to fit them all in!

I started with free shows at schools and it grew from there.

I also have to add. If you are looking to make a business out of this then I hate to be the bearer of bad news. But you should run it like a business advertizing is part of business, so set some advertizing money up in the budget.
