Lotions, potions or balms?

Postby Tom Lauten » Jan 18th, '08, 18:27

Does anyone know of a GENUINELY amazing lotion for sleights and card work? My hands stay pretty dry and I have real trouble getting a grip on coins and cards especially for things like glides, separating roughed "items" and clips and palms. I'd love to find somethingthat actually stays "active" but isn't a simple grease or wax.

I bet there are some innovative products out there.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I have a real problem at this time of year with dry hands - I think it's the cold. As a result of this, I have trouble palming and generally getting a good grip of the deck.

I have been using for about 6 months, Texture Spray, available from Magicshop.co.uk at £9.99. You spray it on, and about 5 minutes later it does in fact give you that bit of grip without the greasyness of hand lotion.

I hope this helps!

Regards,

Stuart

Doesn't Steve Della have a hand lotion specially formulated for card workers, or its that the same thing?

Glycerin & Rosewater, available from Boots for a couple of quid.

Works by forming a 'coating' over your hand which encourages your skin to sweat.
You can't feel the coating, but your hands will feel naturally moist.

A bottle will last for years.

Sortkwik from cards4magic does a great job, especially when counting currency notes and that kind of intense work.

No, You will actually be unaware that you have applied the spray. At first I was unconvinced as to how effective it is.

You spray it on - it's just a liquid in a spray bottle, then it rubs in really easily, but make sure you also apply to the tips of your fingers. I find that it takes about 5 minutes to really work. Your hands then feel just like they normally do, but there is an increased friction with the cards.

It's kind of hard to describe, but your hands will not feel any different to normal and if you were to shake someones hand, they'd be none the wiser.

Hope this helps!

It sounds like thats the kind of thing I need... how long do the noticable benefits last? I assume it washes off easily and would need reapplying after a visit to the "little conjourer's room"?

Glycerin & Rosewater does all that.
In fact, many of the sprays magicians have used - Harry Robson's spray, Chamberlain's (which Vernon, Marlo etc all used) are just G&R with an extra ingredient, like sugar.
I've used Robson's but can't really detect a difference.

Great thing about G&R is that it costs a fraction of the others and you can pick it up in your local Boots.

You would need to reapply after washing hands, but there's no need to wash it off, it's just like a conventional lotion that you would apply to any part of your body (leave the innuendo there!).

I generally apply before performing the likes of table hopping for an hour at a time, and haven't had to reapply.

Stuart

The two I have used and still do, are: Cornhuskers Lotion and Chamberlain's Golden Touch. Both are quite inexpensive and work really well.

The thing about Sortkwik is that I find I am constantly applying it to my hands/fingers because it doesn't last long at all. Otherwise, it's quite good; if only it would last a decent amount of time!

Might have to go to Boots and give that glycerin and rosewater stuff a try.
