An effect like this is worth a million "quarter in soda can" type nonsense.

Indeed it is very nice. A real thing of beauty and magical to boot. Thank you for posting it.

However to compare it with quarter in soda can makes no sense - as they are totally different genres of magic. CMH is one of the strongest pieces of close magic there is, but I wouldn't compare that to the Orange Tree either...

I think that Freddie was using "quarter in soda can" as an example. He does say quaeter in a soda can type stuff. I assume he meant Ellusionist type, over-hyped effects that we get on youtube performed by teen "magicians" with little or no presentation.

Superb and yet another reason why the BBC should get on with agreeing to release Paul's shows on DVD!

I meant it in the context that despite the magic world being flooded with over-hyped similar effects all claiming to be original and the latest thing, there are inventions of true originality and beauty that have been all but forgotten by most modern magicians.
I'm quite frankly sick of seeing so many variations of "soda" can effects, both professional and performed by idiots on youtube that clips like this are not only refreshing in the uniqueness of the effect (despite being very old!) but also in the performance given by Paul Daniels. He knows how to sell an effect and mantain interest.

That, honestly, was the most beautiful piece of magic I have ever seen.

It looks so beautiful, and magic CAN be beautiful, rather than hit and run in yer face stuff. It makes you wonder how good Houdin's live shows must have been and what effect it would have had on the audiences of the time as it still has an enchanting quality today.

Do ya reckon Houdin told the audience about the whole clockwork wind up thing? Or he somehow sleighted it, or had it prepared before. Sometimes if a piece of magic is TOO unbelievable, it takes away as its just too impossible. Saying that, back then they may have been very unaware of the technology etc.

Back then people were less sceptical than they are today. The era he lived is also witnessed the birth of spiritualism so you can class the attitude then as:

(a) more open to possibilities
or
(b) more gullible

Depending on your viewpoint of course...
