Questions and help

Postby dave_uk » Jan 21st, '08, 00:06

Hi every one
:)
Just a quick post and one again sorry if they are new be questions…
For those of you who don’t know I am new to magic and have just started on what I hope to be a long journey. I wanted to start with something basic and fun so after looking around on the internet (no magic shops around here or if there is I don’t know where) and found this

http://www.prudhoemagic.co.uk/product_i ... r7o5ke6kfg

Sponge (DVD and 4 Sponge Balls) by Jay Noblezada,

thought it looked good and a DVD to help me learn how could I go wrong.
I then found this forum and have fund lots of help so far after take the advice from member on here I have ordered myself a copy of Mark Wilson's Complete Course should be here any day, and also got a pack of cards and 101 trick to do with cards book.
I have been learning both tricks and I think they are coming along well still a long way to go tho.

Just a couple of questions I have seen the sponge ball toolbox reviewed on here is it worth getting will it teach me much more than the DVD I have.

Also what to you store all your tricks in?

Thanks every one :)

I'll second Spongeball Toolbox, very very good. Also Mark Wilson's got quite a nice sponge routine in his book.

I'll third that spongeball toolbox recommendation pretty much everything in there that you need to get you started and there's some lovely stuff on the dvd...it's what I'm currently working on...

I cannot compare to the jay dvd as I do not have that dvd.

The wilson book will, if you're like me, delight and overwhelm you...where do you start...there's so much in it...but take a deep breath and dive in...the sponge routine in there is nice...all good stuff to get the creative juices flowing.

Good Luck with them all.

I only usually have a couple of decks of cards, some sponges and maybe some coins and rope. All fits nicely in a handbad for me.

I suspect it rather depends on what you're intending to perform as Lady of Mystery pointed out you can usually fit it all in your handbag...errr...

Pockets is my normal place...sponges can hide in there quite well, cards coins...depends what you want...

I do have an old metal brief case that I can stow stuff in when I'm not using it, away from prying eyes

When I did my first few gigs I took a medium sized fishing tackle box but quickly found out that taking all the props I have was a little on the side of overkill.
Nowadays I take a small perspex lockable box about 15cm sq. (came with Bill Abbotts "Thing" effect) or a satchel bag containing only the effects I know I am going to perform.
If it is just a matter of performing down the pub for some friends then I would just stuff an item or two in your pocket. Deck of cards, sponges, TT etc.
Just dont turn up in the pub with a metamorphosis box, 3 sexy assistants and a smoke machine.

In terms of asking whether or not you should buy more source material relating to the same thing, then yes you definitely should. You'll learn the hard and expensive way that there's never one book or dvd or whatever that tells you everything you need or want to know (although as a beginner you'll find that the recommended classics will have all you need for a while) and furthermore after a while you'll buy stuff in the knowledge that it's unlikely you'll end up using anything at all from it. I consider a purchase to be well worth it if I get only one bit of patter that I'll use.

Now the smoking ban is in I can see why you'd not take the machine, but the assistants and box? Hell, if you've got it, flaunt it that's what I say...

Sorry mate that was from me, must have been some sort of mix up. Where are these pics anyway? I've been waiting all day.
