Sussex Magic Circle, Cub Scouts and Xmas Party's

Postby Magical_Trevor » Dec 4th, '07, 12:32

Hey guys and gals,

This is more of a mini blog than a forum post, but hey its magic related in several ways...and I do kinda need some advice.

Sussex Magic Circle, I emailed the chairman and he invited me to come along this thursday (6th Dec) - Im extatic, I've never really had the balls to do anything like this, and im really excited, but I'm nervous as hell, is this normal? I know I'm gonna be meeting other magicians and stuff, but I cant help but shake like a mad thing whenever I think about it - I think I'm dreading the day they say 'lets see what you can do then' and I fail to impress them :S

Xmas Party, was the good old (if slightly early) B&Q Xmas party last weekend here in Brighton, and (as Im sure a LOT of you will do) I took along a deck of cards with me - the reaction was amazing :-O 'I had no idea you were into magic, and its so good' said one manager of mine - even though I was drunk, thus didnt try anything more than a very bad handling version of an ambitious card routine and a 'find the aces' trick. The responce was amazing, and the experience REALLY boosted my confidence with performing, maybe its because I knew some of them (not all - many broguht partners / spouces along) or maybe its because I was a little tipsy and it was very informal. The only thing was, 1 man - The HR managers Husband - he was following me heckling me most of the evening...'he isnt shuffling them properly', 'Thats easy, I saw it on TV once', 'He always picks the stupid people to do tricks on, cos clever people see how its done' to name a few - I tried to throw off any comments, ie let spectators shuffle and inspect the cards (apart from my newly modified ID obviously - BEST TRICK IN THE WORLD BTW), but he really put a blow on the massive confidence boost I had gained before :( Aain, just asking, is this normal, or is he just a drunk who needs to be forgotten about?

3rd, and final - One of the night crew ladies works as a cub leader, and asked if I would go along, do some tricks and then show them to do some, allowing them to get a badge / sticker on a chart (or some other form of recognition for their hard work / skills at entertaining). I was flattered, but I've never entertained kids before - though it would be fun to do, Im not even sure where to start with what I would teach or present...any help would be GREATLY appreciated :) [I have been watching kids magic shows, so Im thinking for teaching do some simple rope tricks, a simple 3 card monte - with gaff cards etc that we can make on the night, show them how it works etc and a simple item vanish, similar to the r***n works maybe]

Rant / blog over, many thans to people who reply with helful advice :)

Oh I'd just forget about the idiot, you get people like that from time to time, as long as they're not exposing anything or taking away from other people's enjoyment they're usually best off just being ignored. Ignor them and you'll usually find they get bored and wander off when their beer runs out.

As for the cubs, that should be really good fun, I've done a couple of things like this and find that some self working card tricks are the best to teach. Something simple that they can pickup quickly.

I'm keen to hear how it goes t your magic club night.

I'm also trying to summon up the courage to attend my local club. I know I really really should go but I find the propsect quite nerve-wracking. I know that as soon as I'm asked to do something I'l freeze, or I'l be worried they all know exactly what I'm up to and it will fall flat...

I was a member at the Sussex Magic Circle when I lived in Hove and found them really encouraging and friendly. It is a great way to learn and although performing to magicians is nerveracking - you will get some good advice. Enjoy!

UPDATE !!!

After my work xmas party at the start of December, I was asked to entertain children by a coleauge (spelling?) and (in my semi drunken state) agreed, not really knowing what I was letting myself in for

After taking some time to think about the situation, I went out, did some research on kids shows, magicans in the area etc and got some pretty good data / info on tricks used, times etc

I then went to my local magic cirlce group (for which I have an audition coming up...if I pass, then woo, full membership into the sussex magic cirle for me whereas...if I fail, well...lets think positive eh Wink) and asked for some advice, to which I got a mixture of reaction...some saying 'kids are great' others saying 'hell no man...just hell no'

Anyways, the dreaded thursday (10th Jan) arrived and no less than 25 cub scouts (and 2 beavers) turned up to be entertained...I had all my props, all my jumbo cards...all my tricks to show them how to make (simple rope illusions etc) and my trusty girlfriend mrs trev to take some piccys and give advice / critisise afterwards.....

In summary, for my FIRST EVER SHOW - it was AWSOME, they all behaved (apart from one little lad, who had a marvins magic set of the trick he was helpign with...but he was good enough not to spoil it fully) and I was able to hand out 30+ cards and flyers about me Surprised

Just thought I would share my experience with you guys Razz

Cheers
Dan

I'm a great advocate of magic clubs and you will get nothing but encouragement if it's anything like my own expereince of the two clubs that I've joined.

What you are feeling is natural and we all go through it but relax - there really is nothing to worry about.
