Best Gig To Date!

Postby themagicwand » Jan 31st, '08, 23:52

Just returned from a gig I was absolutely dreading, and as usual fate thought it would be very funny to make it my best gig ever!

It was an 18th birthday party in a huge country house. There were a group of 50 or so 18 year olds (many rugger players) and alcohol involved, so you can see how I approached with a slight sinking feeling in my heart.

However they were an amazing crowd - it was like being on the streets with David Blaine. Whoops of delight, shrieks of disbelief, people running out of the room in terror, and even a proposal of marriage from a charming young thing which I must admit put a cheeky grin on my face.

Because I was trapped in one huge room with the same 50 or so people for two hours, I was really forced to push myself, try out a few new things, take a few risks, but I must have been performing under a lucky star coz it went like a charm.

Rapturous applause when I left, a tip from the dad who paid my fee, and the biggest compliment of all - a young lad coming up to me as I left and saying he was inspired and now wanted to learn how to be a magician.

Cue overly emotional music and me crying myself to sleep with tears of happiness. It was like Dead Poets Society. Only better. Which isn't hard.

I actually like groups of drunken exuberant lads, intimidating to start with but once you've done one good thing, ie. your opener, they're great. The best thing is they self regulate hecklers, if they like you and are being entertained they'll smack down anyone who tries to interfere. The reactions are also some of the best in terms of whooping and hollering, as you mentioned.

Sounds like you did everything you needed to, nice one!

Yes, this is true. There were a few late comers who were all "What's this guy all about then?" But those already in the room quickly "shushed" them.

Great stuff Magicwand.

There's nothing like the 'high' that you get after a great nights work.
