Appearing Canes

Postby Lawrence » Dec 30th, '07, 19:57

I'm going to go and get myself an appearing cane, if there's such a thing on the market as meets my requirements.
1) Would preferably appear from a handkerchief, and can be appeared from one
2) is sturdy enough (once a cane) to be spun/thrown around a little bit
3) around 2 feet long

Now given my immense lack of knowledge on the subject of appearing gimmicky things I was hoping someone out there could point me in the direction of an appropriate prop. any ideas?

the ultimate aim is to have to cane float around a bit after being produced, this isn't the difficult part though, just getting the right cane is, i think.

cheers guys

Go for a plastic fantasio one L-Dawg they are a lot kinder to your hands. Yeap you can have them appear from a Hank. Jeff Mcbride on one of his stage magic Dvds cover this.

Depends on how much your willing to spend. But from my experience aluminum canes hold up longer and are easier to reset. But if your on a lower budget go for Fantasio.

Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Just so happens I'm having a little trouble with this one myself.

I've got a black plastic Fantasio Appearing Cane, and I'm having a great deal of trouble vanishing a silk inside it. I've tied it to the gimmick, and when I let go, the cane only extends about half or less of what it should. I've tried ironing the silk, and I'm only using a 6 inch silk that came with my TT.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try "pulling" the cane open this should stop the silk getting caught up. Rther then just letting the cane open.

I've played with a Fantasio and they are a bit tempremental but should be fine for your purposes Larry. When used in conjunction with a finger flasher you get a nice production if that floats your boat.

I like fantasio but my one complaint is that it makes too much noise when it opens. Anyone have any suggestions

Are you storing the cane opened up? If you leave it like that, even hanging it up so it is off the ground, it should react better. Only close it when you need to. If you are doing that, maybe you are being too gentle using the gimmick, so you don't get the "spring" action. It sounds as if it is one of the above that is making it open too slowly.

I would get a Fantasio plastic one - because in my experience, the metal ones can give you a nasty cut!
