i think that sleight of hand is extreamly important for me and my routines, but other magicians i know don't use all that much. i think it depends on your personal style and choice. pretty much all coin magic requires at least basic knowledge of sleight of hand but things like mentalism dont. its entirely for the perfomer to decide how much they want to use.
dont feel pressured into learning things you dont want to. when i first started in magic i use no sleight of hand but over the years ive developed into using it more and more. i still frequently use svengali decks, rough w smooth and other stuff. its all down to you and presentation, if you can make it entertaining for someone to watch then do it.
