Coin In Bottle - What is the best version?

Postby magikmax » Feb 9th, '08, 18:28

Just a quick one, I've read through the threads of both Kevin Parker's Passing Through, and Abyss, and I quite fancy adding a coin in a bottle trick to my repetoir, as I don't currently do any coin magic (in the routine), or penetration (snigger) at all.

I've read through the threads for both Passing Through and Abyss, and really can't decide between them. I know I can't afford them both, and I have been swaying towards Abyss, but I would be grateful for any input the board have. I don't want a FC version of the coin in the bottle, I'd rather do something without a gimmicked coin.

Also, what is the difference between Abyss and Atlantis? Is Atlantis like a disposable version of Abyss (mentions works 15 times on MAGICMagic)?

I would also prefer to do the trick with a sealed (or apparantly) bottle. Also, for these tricks, which brands of bottles do people find work best? Can I find bottles down my local tesco for example that will do the job?

my preferences (for your recommendation) are:

1. Sealed bottle
2. Ungimmicked coin
3. Can be handed out as a keepsake after penetration (ooh err) without any further tampering
4. Readily available (and reasonably priced) bottle (either plastic or glass).
5. Something that I can do a quick reset on if I want to repeat the effect (table hopping or otherwise)
6. I've read on the Abyss thread that you can only use a 2p or a 1p UK coin with it, is this indeed the case, or are there any other coins that might work?
7. Possibility of using a business card instead of a coin?

If neither of the above tricks fit my requirements, can anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks in advance,

Sandy

I know you siad you don't want to use a FC but I must question why, especially if you're table hopping. You borrow the coin (switching, obviously but it's so easy and there's oodles of cover), you use their bottle, as far as they are concerned there is no 'funny business' as the coin and bottle are there's and you leave them there afterwards. Plus there is no reset involved. It's strong, visual, simple to do and plays very big - what's not to like?

Nothing really, it's just I want something that I don't have to replace. I have a F***ing quarter, which after several years of storage in good conditions needed new r****r b**ds, which I couldn't get for that particular model because I bought it abroad some years before.

I don't mind the whole switching coin thing, I'm by no means a coin expert, but doing sponge balls etc. and having a good grounding in the basics, I can do a comfortable french drop or switch easy enough, it's just I don't want to use a FC. The other thing is that one of the sections on the coin I used popped off once, which I wouldn't particularly like a repeat of, and I would like the possibility of giving the coin and bottle away as a souvineer, which I obviously wouldn't want to do with an FC.

Not 100% sure about the Abyss as I don't own it, I've had the method described to me though and you could hand out the bottle afterwards, sealed and all. Passing Thru could be done with a sealed bottle but that woudn't be ideal, as it's best with a glass Snapple type bottle. You might want to consider Factory Sealed by Alakazam or Bullet from E as they have very similar methods and very visual penetrations, both with ordinary coins. In fact if you pm me I'll tell you how to get a coin into a plastic bottle that can then be handed out and opened by the spec, after that it's just how you want to reveal the coin being in the bottle really.

CIB tricks all have their own pros and cons, like any plot, but they're all pretty interchangeable so if there's a certain aspect from one you don't like you can usually replace it with one from another routine.

Hi MagikMax,
I wouldn't go for Passing Thru. It requires a clear glass bottle of such specific proportions to be fully effective that until Snapple makes a shocking come-back in the UK, chances are you are not going to regularly chance upon the right bottle. It also requires something to be p**med on and off, and therefore has a few angle issues (would not necessarily be ideal for standing performance for seated spectators). Obviously, what it has going for it is it uses a single signed coin and is incredibly visual.

Abyss is a sort of "two halves almost make a whole" product. What you get is two "secrets", one of which is a method of getting a coin that is too big to fit into a plastic bottle into said bottle, so that it can be handed out as an "impossible souvenir". The other is a way to create the "effect" of the coin being pushed into the bottle, for which you receive a couple of items.

The first piece of information is hugely useful - the second (plus items) is a slightly fiddly and not particularly visual way to achieve this effect, and most magicians will instantly recognise an obvious and potentially superior alternative. If someone is willing (and it looks like Bronz is) to share with you the first piece of info, don't bother getting Abyss. It doesn't use a signed coin. You can actually use any coin with the method supplied by Abyss, but the obvious streamlined handling would require you to use a 2p or 1p, and if you're going to bother with the impossible kicker ending, that basically limits you to 2p, unless you use a really narrow necked bottle.

The Abyss instructions don't tell you how, but with extra knowledge you could do this with a sealed bottle. You could either pursuade someone to be nice and tell you how to do this, or by "Labelled" by... Ben Williams is it? However, I feel there is little point in doing Abyss with a sealed bottle - the size of the coin should make it clear there was no way the coin entered via the neck, so why would it make any difference if it was sealed? Finally, in terms of "reset", there is potentially none because you just use a new bottle every time, but they do take a bit of prep, so make of that what you will.

Some of the other CIBs use an optical effect by which to hide the presence of the coin in the bottle - you can make your own mind up but I wouldn't be overly keen on using this, I feel that it'd be an angle nightmare and wouldn't touch them with a bargepole if I was table-hopping.

A final option is something I haven't heard much from for a while, called "Piercing Thru". There was an excellent demo knocking around, it was then promised for release but I don't remember it happening. This uses both a signed coin and a switch (work that one out :P ), can't be done with a sealed bottle, does take a small amount of prep but could quickly be done onsite with most plastic bottles. You can't leave them with an "impossible souvenir" but you do show it to be impossibly trapped before removing it by cutting open the bottle.

Just done a quick search: it still seems to be in commerical limbo, but you can check out the demo on YouTube here.

Who are you trying to fool and entertain here -- yourself or your audience? It's not the method. It's the sell.

Frankly, I would stick with the FC and do a switch out. Do you really think spectators are impressed with the idea that their quarter is stuck in a bottle? I don't think so.

The layman makes up his own mind about what has happened.

If you must hand out the bottle, do the Abyss. Bear in mind that if you are using quarters, you will need 52 prepared bottles, because you will have one for each state, an old Washington quarter and a bicentennial quarter that you may be handed.

thanks very much to both Bronz and Farlsborough - very detailed reply there mate, cheers. Looks like everyone's looking for something different with these CIB routines. The others are right, there's nothing wrong with a simple FC in a bottle, but I just kind of liked the 'impossible' idea of a coin inside a sealed bottle, or at least that you could hand out as a keepsake to the person watching the trick.

I would check out Factory Sealed. It meets all of your requirements, and it is simply amazing. I recommend it, I think I have a review up on here, so you might want to check it out.

Thanks,

How about a whiskey or vodka bottle for passing thru?

Well theres no need for language like that!

I bought an effect that wasnt a coin in a bottle but involved making the label of the bottle pass through the bottle so it was on the inside - without breaking the cap seal. I cant remember the name though.

Abyss

Postby Magic Flyer » Feb 11th, '08, 00:13

I have just purchased Abyss and think the number of variations and the manual that comes with it is well worth the money. As a relative newcomer very interested in coin magic I think Abyss is a more versatile and practical method than Passing Through. Both techniques are very visual, but I found it extremely hard to find a suitable bottle in the UK for PT, whereas Abyss can be done with almost any plastic bottle. So Abyss gets my vote.

@George Chan, it is named Labeled, there is now a new version but the principe for the sealed bottle is the same.

I didnt occured to buy factory sealed since i had bought another trick wich seemed pretty similar, unfortunately thats the one i forgot the name!

I spent lot of money on research for a CIB to use and its only with experimentations of different method that i happen to have found ways to make those coins goes trough glass or plastic visually wich suited me.

To become completely impromptu i had to resort to my PK ring, if you already know about the basic coin trough glass with that, your half way trough a CIB with signed coin but off course not sealed bottle.(It is still possible sealed but not signed then, although piercing trough seem to overcome this)

Im not really good at the translation of my patterns but still i will send you a general idea of what is possible without revealing more then what i already did.

You take a coin and an empty bottle with the cap, plastic or glass and both can be borrowed. The coin can be signed on 1 side, spectator hold both items at start.

The pattern should be around the expectation you want to set but basicly you ask the spectator to untwist the cap and you take the bottle. Then you confront the spectator to the only way he know to put a coin inside wich he does.

You then take the coin out of the bottle and the spectator twist the cap, its your turn to try. You then smash the coin trough the bottle, the signed coin is inside and your left half clean. Its a bit audacious but everything can be examined.

If your interested to know more, you can pm me. You will need to own/buy a pk ring for that routine.

P.S.: I also stumbled on infusion from Ellusionist, i have no clue who had this clever idea but its a very visual coin trough glass that require no extra or gimmicked items, only a lot of practice. Its a nice prelude to the routine above and can be done with the same bottle if the neck is wide enough.

The talk of plastic bottles makes makes me think you're looking for something more suited to bar rather than banquet style in which case have you considered Prohibition (cap in beer bottle)? It's the bottle cap rather than a coin but may seem more natural if it's that kind of environment. Just a thought.

Factory Sealed is a very strong effect. I stick 99.9% of the time to card magic, but I bought that DVD just because I had to know how it was done.

It's brilliant but, without giving anything away, the name of the trick is misleading!
