Just saying hi

Postby Mark Chandaue » Jun 7th, '04, 10:41

Hi guys. I'm Mark Chandaue, been doing Magic pretty much all my life, 35 of my 40 years have been spent doing magic (and I spent the other 5 watching it :)). Got started when my Father gave me a copy of Bobo's at the tender age of 4. Hehe he didn't expect me to read it but thought it would get me off his back for half hour or so whilst he was getting ready for a show (yup he was also a magician), instead it got me pestering him to teach me how to read. Still by age 5 I triumphantly showed him coins accross and thus a life long journey began.

In 1980 I became the Hamleys resident magician (back when Hamleys had a professional magic dept). It was a choice between this and a winter season in Switzerland, I jumped at the chance as this was a position my Father held around the 50's with Ron McMillan and Harry Baron (he also worked in Gamages with them) so the job at Hamleys had always been a bit of an ambition of mine. I left Hamleys after they were bought out and the magic dept was made more general public oriented and went back to performing. I was a working pro for most of the 80's then took a break and returned to it in the 90's. on and off but marriage made the travelling less appealing and since then I've made my living through my second love, computers.

The magic though is in the blood so it's always been there in the background, I still perform from time to time but dropped off the scene for a while. My first love is close up magic with a particular leaning towards coins, my favourite magicians are too many too mention but high on the list is my old mate Kevin Reay, oh and Lennart Green (who is obviously not human :)). My all time favourite is probably Ascanio (god rest his soul). I only wish I could describe the sheer beauty of Ascanio's work, to see him perform was to know the full beauty of real magic.

Hehe well that's pretty much my life story :)

Mark

hi and welcome to the board... hope your stay here is enjoyable

Welcome, with that much time in magic I'm sure you have some stories to tell, I'm sure we'll all look forward to hearing some of them!

I certainly hope to be able to contribute a lot. Mind you magic has been advancing at an incredible pace of late which is real exciting but kind of disorienting for an old guy like me, traditionally very little has really changed in magic over the years but in these last 5 - 10 years there has been such an influx of incredible young talent and innovation that it kind of makes me feel like a bit of a dinosaur, but a very excited dinosaur :)

Hehe not too sure if I have many stories but one does spring to mind. I was watching my old friend Nick Nicholas perform the linking rings in Covent Garden, after he handed the 2 linked rings to a spectator and asked him to "do as I do" he took the other 2 and while he was turned to the audience on the left displaying the rings in preparation to unlink them, his spectator had studied the rings and had found the weld and was now pulling hard to break it. As Nick started the unlink the spectator manage to prise one of his rings open and unlinked them. Nick (now with the rings separated turned towards the spectator expecting to see him with a pair of linked rings instead saw the spectator in the same position with a ring in each hand. An absolute classic moment, one of the few times when everyone but the performer is in on the joke. The kicker came when the flabbergasted nick blurted out "But ... but.... that's impossible. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in all my life.

Oh in case you are wondering why i keep signing off as Frugal, force of habit, it's my nickname and call sign as a flight simmer. I also run a very large combat flight simulation web site http://www.frugalsworld.com in the flight sim community I am Mark "Frugal" Bush, in the fraternity of magic I am Mark Chandaue, not a great stage name but I have always kept it in tribute to my Father Ross Chandaue (who was known affectionately to Ron McMillan Harry Baron and Bobby Bernard as Cardoma Bush). Not directly magic related but if you are interested I wrote a piece about my Father in my column http://www.frugalsworld.com/columns/Frugal.shtml It's the third item down but the pictures will make it obvious which is the correct one :)

We have met.I used to haunt hamleys in the last few years of the decent magical counter. When it was down stairs, tucked in the corner.
The Jamming sessions on a saturday were very instructional. I miss those days terribly.
